Mustangs overtake Willowbrook quickly
Downers Grove South took command of the game after the first offensive play Willowbrook ran.
After a false start penalty the Warriors fumbled the ball on their first play and the Mustangs' Jarel Culver recovered the ball on the 27-yard line. Less than a minute later, Scottie Williams scored on a 1-yard run and the rout was on as Downers South beat Willowbrook 40-6 Friday night in Downers Grove.
That touchdown was the first of many for Williams, who finished with 4 touchdowns on the day, 3 rushing and 1 receiving. Downers South quarterback Chandler Whitmer was also effective throwing the football as he finished the game 8 of 17 for 117 yards and 2 touchdown passes.
Downers South's defense also came to play as it allowed only 2 first downs and 33 yards in the first half. The Mustangs (2-2, 1-0 West Suburban Gold) also forced Willowbrook into 4 first-half turnovers, scoring 20 points off of turnovers in the first half.
"Our defense definitely played great for us tonight," Williams said. "This was a great win for us. The offense got to show that we can put some points on the board while our defense proved they aren't a one week wonder."
Jibril Jones scored the lone touchdown for Willowbrook (0-4, 0-1) on a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter.
