Beachler excelling at Taylor
Former Westminster Christian athlete Tyler Beachler is making some national waves of late.
Beachler, now a member of the Taylor University men's soccer team, has played a big role in the team's first 5 games of the season. Through those first 5 games, Beachler had 6 goals to go with 1 assist. He logged those 6 goals via 9 total shots on goal. According to the Web site www.dakstats.com, Beachler ranked 15th among NAIA Division I players in shots per game (5.6) and ranked 24th in goals per game (1.2). He also was ranked 35th in points per game (2.6).
Beachler is a freshman midfielder-forward for Taylor, located in Upland, Ind.
Walter at Martin: Larkin girls soccer alum Shannon Walter has wasted no time finding the back of the net this season. Walter, now a junior midfielder at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn., had 2 goals and 2 assists in the team's first 3 games of the season. Martin Methodist, which won an NAIA national title last year, started the 2008 campaign with a 3-0 mark. Walter had 2 goals and an assist in Martin's 5-0 victory over Illinois Institute of Technology. She also had an assist in Martin's 3-1 win over Northwood University. Walter also recorded a shot in Martin's 1-0 victory over the University of Mobile. Walter scored both goals in Martin's national tournament semifinal win last season and also had a goal in the tournament championship win against Azusa Pacific. Walter was a second-team NAIA All-American last year. Walter was the team's second-leading scorer with 16 goals and a team-high 18 assists. She played in every game for the RedHawks last year.
Zwingelberg at Miami: Jodi Zwingelberg, another former Larkin girls soccer standout, is now a junior forward on the Miami (Ohio) women's soccer team. Zwingelberg had played in all of the team's first 3 games of the season and had a pair of assists while taking 3 shots. Miami started the season 1-2. Zwingelberg started all 19 games as a sophomore in 2007 and had 1 goal and took 24 shots on goal (fourth-best total on the team). In her freshman season, Zwingelberg was named to the all-Mid-American Conference freshman team and was also an all-MAC tournament team selection. Zwingelberg, a former honorary captain of the Daily Herald All-Area girls soccer team who scored 96 career goals at Larkin, was Miami's second-leading scorer in 2006 with 5 goals and 4 assists. She ranked second that year in scoring with 14 points.
Clark at Upper Iowa: Elgin Academy alum Allison Clark is now a member of the women's soccer team at Upper Iowa University. Clark had played in all of the team's first 5 contests and had a goal to go with 5 shots (3 shots on goal). Clark scored her first goal of the season in Upper Iowa's 4-0 victory over Mt. Mercy. Upper Iowa was 2-2-1 overall to start the week.
Wadington at Carleton: Former Elgin Academy standout golfer Turner Wadington is now a member of the men's golf team at Carleton University in Northfield, Minn. Wadington, a freshman, recently participated in the Augsburg College Fall Invitational. Wadington finished the event with scores of 79 and 85 for a 2-round total of 164. Carleton finished 13th out of 17 entries.
Magiera at Fordham: Carpentersville resident Nick Magiera was recently named the Patriot League defensive player of the week. Magiera, a Barrington graduate, is a sophomore linebacker for Fordhman University. It was his first career weekly honor. In Fordham's 16-0 opening-day shutout win against Rhode Island, Magiera recorded 7 tackles, 4 solo tackles and had 4 tackles that registered 21 yards in losses. Magiera also had two quarterback sacks and broke up a pass. Magiera took part in what is believed to be the first Fordham football game played on a Sunday.
Childers at St. Ambrose: Former St. Edward girls golfing star Caiti Childers is now a sophomore on the St. Ambrose University women's golf team. To start the week, Childers had played in 3 events for St. Ambrose. Childers logged a second-place finish with a round of 79 at the Augustana triangular. The Augustana triangular featured a field of 25 golfers. She also took sixth (in a field of 68 golfers) at the Mount Mercy invitational with an 85 and recorded a 2-round total of 171 (89 and 82) at the Wartburg Fall Invitational. Childers' 7-stroke recovery on the second day helped her finish 33rd out of a field of 100 golfers. Childers was averaging 83.7 for 18 holes to start the week. St. Ambrose was ranked 26th in the recent NAIA women's golf rankings. St. Ambrose qualified for the NAIA nationals this past May and competed in the national tournament in Lake San Marcos, Calif. St. Ambrose finished the 4-day tournament in 20th place. St. Ambrose had 2 first-place finishes (Mount Mercy and Augustana) and took eighth at Wartburg to start the season.
Also at St. Ambrose, Nicole Sargent, a sophomore from Algonquin, shot a 98 at the Augustana triangular.
Zipoy at Drake: Burlington Central graduate Emily Zipoy is a freshman on the Drake University women's cross country team. Zipoy recently competed in the Bulldog Classic at Ewing Park in Des Moines, Iowa, where she placed 19th with a time of 17:59 in the 4,000-meter race.
Meyer and Phebus running: Another pair of Central alums are running at the collegiate level this fall.
Former Rockets' standout Ryan Phebus is a freshman on the Wichita State men's cross country team, while Kevin Meyer is a freshman on the Carroll College men's cross country team.
Zambetti at Carroll: Bartlett graduate Joe Zambetti is a teammate of Meyer's at Carroll. Zambetti, also a freshman, finished 22nd with a time of 23:04 (4 miles) at the season-opening Tom Barry invitational hosted by St. Norbert College at Colburn Park in Green Bay, Wis.
Krog at Murray State: Burlington Central alum Teresa Krog is a member of the Division I Murray State University women's volleyball team. Through the start of the week, Krog had played in 4 matches (1 start) and was averaging 1.30 kills and 1.55 points per game. Krog is a freshman middle hitter for Murray State (Murray, Kan.), which was 3-3 to start the week.
