Rosary falls in title match

In the two years Plainfield North's girls volleyball tournament has existed, Naperville North has won both times.

This year, the Huskies improved to 6-0 on the season after defeating Rosary 25-23, 25-26 in the championship game Saturday.

"We had a good tournament," Naperville North coach Jennifer Urban said. "The girls were challenged a lot by Rosary in the finals. They are a good team. We had a lot of different people contribute in the final match and that was good to see... we were happy to come in and win five matches."

In the second day of play, Naperville North also topped St. Charles North 25-15, 25-17.

The loss to the Huskies was the first of the season for Rosary (5-1), which began its day with a 23-25, 25-14, 25-18 win over Joliet Township. The Steelwomen placed third in the 16-team tournament after topping the North Stars 25-15, 25-14.

"Not knowing really what to expect from this team, seeing that we are half old and half young, we really had no expectations coming into this," Rosary coach Lisa Kasper said. "It was kind of just a weekend to see where we are at right now. It was good. I'm more than satisfied."

The North Stars are now 4-3, as coach Lindsay Trudell is pleased with the way her team played overall this weekend with wins over Plainfield Central and Marian Central Friday.

"I really would have liked to have won that last match. I think if we would have played up to our potential, we could have and should have," Trudell said. "But beating Crystal Lake South (in pool play Saturday morning) was huge for us. That really showed what our potential can be."

Batavia is 3-3 overall after losing to Rosary and Huntley and beating Oswego East.

"We need to work on our offense," Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said. "We need to work on our setting and hitting... but for the most part, we are adjusting to all our new positions."

Marian Catholic won the Copper after it defeated Oswego East in three games. Wheaton Academy placed 15th when it beat Oswego, 25-15, 25-21.

Crystal Lake South (5-1) won the Silver Division after topping Huntley 25-23, 25-17.

"It's a letdown always, but I'm still really happy with how they finished and how they played," CLS coach Jorie Fontana said. "If we are going to take our losses, I'd rather do it now. It's a little bit of a letdown, but I think the girls learned a lot from it."

CLS improved to 5-1 and Huntley is now 4-3.

"We are very excited," Huntley coach Michelle Jakubowski said of placing sixth. "(Friday) we went three (games) with Rosary and today we beat Plainfield North and played (Crystal Lake) South tough in the first game and didn't give up in the end. I can't wait to play South again Tuesday. I'm proud of my girls."

Hinsdale South topped Plainfield North, 25-15, 15-25, 25-21 for seventh place. In the Bronze, Plainfield Central beat Batavia 25-20, 25-21 for ninth place and Bolingbrook defeated Lincoln-Way North for 11th, 28-26, 25-22.
