Big 2nd half lifts C-G past Marian

Offensive perfection for one half.

Well, almost.

Scoring on 4 of 5 possessions, Cary-Grove outscored Marian Central 28-14 during the second half in posting a hard-fought 38-17 win over the Hurricanes in a nonconference game at Cary-Grove's Al Bohrer Field Friday night.

"We made some adjustments at halftime," said Cary-Grove coach Bruce Kay. "We went to a different formation and got some better angles to execute the option."

Nursing a slim 10-3 halftime advantage, the Trojans set the tone on the first drive of the second half.

Moving 73 yards on 11 running plays, the Trojans (2-0) chewed up 5 minutes and 46 seconds of clock. The Drive ended on a 7-yard run by Alex Hembrey. The kick by Marcus Kerrigan, who booted a 30-yard field goal in the first half gave the Trojans a 17-3 advantage.

But, the resilient Hurricanes came right back to score. Aided by a 40-yard pass from backup quarterback Andy Stochl to Andy Szudarski, the Canes moved 73 yards in 6 plays capped by a 3-yard pass from Stochl to Ryan Szudarski to make the score 17-10 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.

That would be as close as Marian Central would get as the Trojans ripped off 21 consecutive points.

Touchdown runs of 3 and 2 yards by quarterback Tyler Krebs and a 6-yard run by Hembrey gave Cary-Grove a 38-10 lead with 6:51 left in the game. Krebs, who scored 2 touchdowns ended with 137 yards on 17 carries.

"We just made some offensive formation adjustments at halftime," said Krebs. "We got a better angle on the pitches and the offensive linemen did an awesome job. That first drive was huge."

Hembrey rushed for 93 yards on 13 carries and 2 scores as the Trojans rushed for 333 yards, 215 in the second half.

Stochl, subbing for the injured Jon Budmayr, was 15-of-32 for 216 yards and a touchdown with 2 interceptions for the Canes.

"Andy gained some great experience," said Marian Central coach Ed Brucker. "He made some nice throws. They just wore us down in the second half and we made some mistakes. We missed a lot of tackles."
