Steve & Barry's closing some suburban stores

A handful of Steve & Barry's discount sports stores in the area are set to close.

The store at Randhurst Shopping Center in Mount Prospect closed Monday. Others scheduled to close include those at Crossroads Shopping Center in Highland Park, Woodfield Commons in Schaumburg, Yorktown Center in Lombard and Northland Plaza in Dekalb.

Closing dates have not yet been determined. Liquidation sales are planned.

The once popular retailer was purchased out of bankruptcy by BH S&B Holdings, a newly formed affiliate of investment firms Bay Harbour Management and York Capital Management.

The company is planning to shrink the number of stores in operation by 100, from 276 stores to 170 stores.

Area retailers that will remain in operation include locations at Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, Stratford Square in Bloomingdale and Westfield Fox Valley in Aurora.
