Trumpy, Falcons roll over Addison Trail

Wheaton North running back Mike Trumpy approaches football a lot like a little kid approaches a candy store with a fistful of dollars.

"I love football so much, I could not wait for this game," Trumpy said. "I was nervous and excited all day."

Trumpy's nervous excitement settled in his legs in Friday's game against host Addison Trail, as the senior had 214 yards and 3 touchdowns before halftime of an eventual 49-0 Falcons win.

"We were able to get the ball in Trumpy's hands, and he's going to do good things for us," said first-year Falcons coach Joe Wardynski. "It looked like the offensive line was doing a nice job of opening up some holes for him, and Taylor Graham controlled the quarterback position for us.

"All in all, it was a very positive night for the program."

Trumpy finished with 266 yards on 19 carries, using his power and speed on touchdown runs of 66, 60 and 14 yards on the night. Graham had a 2-yard touchdown run, Randal Ellison scored from 40 yards out, and Graham connected with Ivan Tamba for passing touchdowns of 20 and 44 yards.

"They're a very good team, and we couldn't get anything going," said Blazers coach Paul Parpet. "We couldn't get in any rhythm on offense, and we had a lot of missed tackles."

"When you give up those big plays, it turns into something that we just couldn't come back from. We'll have to regroup for next week."

After Graham and Tamba connected from 20 yards out to put the Falcons (1-0) up 7-0, the Blazers (1-0) got a nice kickoff return from Keeshawn Boisvert to the Falcons' 35-yard line.

Ultimately, it was the Blazers' only big play of the night, as the Falcons' defense slammed the door shut in holding Addison Trail to 86 total yards of offense on the night.

Afterwards, Wardynski applauded his defense and looks forward to seeing the Falcons take on defending Class 7A state champion Lake Zurich next week, and Illinois' second-ranked team in Glenbard North the week after that.

"Our kids have got some tough games coming up, but I think they're ready, they're hungry, and they want to prove that we can be a competitive team in the DVC."

The Falcons knew coming in that the Blazers struggled for wins last year, but they took nothing for granted on Friday.

"I was trying to stress to the team all week not to look past (Addison Trail), and I thought the whole team played great," Trumpy said.
