Preview: Wheaton North

Mike Trumpy is a great start for any football team.

But for Wheaton North, it's all about the finish.

Led by their Northwestern-bound senior running back the Falcons have some serious goals that include their first DuPage Valley Conference title and playoff win since 2002.

While the list of familiar faces includes Trumpy and eight other returning starters, one newcomer holds the key. First-year head coach Joe Wardynski, Wheaton Warrenville South's defensive coordinator the last four years, takes the helm hoping to restore a piece of the program's glory days.

"I want to make the transition as seamless as possible," Wardynski said of the coaching change. "We're not out to reinvent the wheel. We want to get the kids excited about wanting to play."

There's plenty to be excited about with Trumpy. After rushing for 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns last season he returns as one of the state's most dangerous offensive players.

Junior quarterback Taylor Graham is back after being a part-time starter as a sophomore. Despite some unexpected offensive losses because of players not coming out for the team, the offensive line still returns three starters in Kevin Volkema, Brian Salat and Andrew Sorgatz.

"With the skill players we have, there's no doubt we've got big-play potential," Wardynski said.

The questions are many on defense, where only three starters return. There's little experience on the line, so linebackers John Sambo and Jack Quinn are crucial.

Keep an eye on defensive back Jack DeAno, among last year's area leaders with 6 interceptions.

"We've got a lot to be excited about," Wardynski said. "We'll do everything we can to make this a good year for us."
