Mosquitoes positive for West Nile

Four mosquito pools in Lake County sampled in August have tested positive for the West Nile virus. The pools were in Barrington, Lake Bluff, Libertyville and Wauconda, according to the Lake County Health Department. These are the first confirmed indicators of the disease's presence here in 2008. In 2007, one dead bird and 53 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus. Five human cases of West Nile were reported and there were no deaths. Residents are asked to continue to prevent breeding in backyards and protect against mosquito bites. Dead birds and stagnant water should be reported to the health department West Nile hotline, (847) 377-8300. For information visit www.co.lake.il.us/helth/ehs/westnile.asp.
