Briefs: Deputy fire chief retiring

Deputy Chief Wayne Matejka is retiring after 42 years with the West Chicago Fire Protection District. An open house in his honor will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Station 1, 200 Freemont St. Matejka joined the district as an on-call volunteer in 1966. In 1972 he was hired as one of the seven full-time paid firefighters and now he is the last of them to retire.

Carol Stream dance

Residents can dance from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday at Brunswick Zone, 170 W. North Ave., Carol Stream, to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The fundraiser, which includes raffles, door prizes and a silent auction, will help raise money for the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. The cost is $35 per person and companies that bring 10 or more participants will receive free two-hour bowling passes. Product donations also will be accepted from businesses. Addison referendum meeting

Addison residents can learn about two referendum questions slated to appear on the Nov. 4 ballot during a meeting of the Addison Electoral Board at 5 p.m. Friday in village hall, 1 Friendship Plaza. The first question will ask if Addison should impose term limits of eight years on the offices of mayor, village clerk and village trustees. If residents vote yes in November, the rule would immediately affect current officeholders. The other question asks if the village should cease to be a home-rule unit. Free Pace Route 714 rides

Patrons of Pace Route 714 will get free rides from Tuesday until Sept. 12. The rides are sponsored by the COD Connector Team and made possible by a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to DuPage County. Route 714, the Naperville-COD-Wheaton Connector, travels between Edward Hospital, the downtown Naperville Metra station, the College of DuPage and the Wheaton Metra station. Warrenville Marine honored

Warrenville VFW 8081 will welcome home Marine Cpl. Justin Graycsyk at 6:30 p.m. Saturday from his second tour of duty in Iraq. Graycsyk is a member of the 2nd Battalion 24th Marines. Justin and his wife, Jacqueline, will be honored at an open house by VFW dignitaries and Mayor David Brummel. The public is welcome to attend at the VFW post, 3S371 Mignin Drive. Benton St. closed in Aurora:

Benton Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today from Lake Street to River Street as part of Aurora's sewer decombination work. A detour route will be posted.
