Elgin library lets patrons sign off on new branch construction

Amelia Stoner loves Elgin's Gail Borden Library.

When the library's new $4.2 million branch opens next year, the 3-year-old Elgin native is sure to love that facility, too. Especially because her name will be on it.

"It's going to look pretty up there," she said.

The tot was one of dozens of kids, adults and library staff members Monday to sign one of three 14-foot-long pine planks that will be installed today on the branch off Bowes Road, west of Randall Road.

Work began in May, and the facility is scheduled to open next summer. It's going to be 10,000 square feet, but eventually could be expanded to 30,000 square feet.

Ceremonies for new buildings usually involve inking messages to a large I-beam that is lowered into place or lifting someone up to sign it.

Gail Borden leaders took a different approach, bringing three long planks into the main library atrium and inviting anyone around to grab a Sharpie.

"We thought more people would be able to participate in this," said Carole Medal, Gail Borden Library director.

The opportunity was a pleasant surprise for patrons.

Kimberlie Majeski of South Elgin dropped by the library with her kids, Torrie and Tyler, and her sister, Kelly Guzman.

"Sometimes, it's tough to get here because of the traffic," said Majeski, who is eager for the branch to open. "It's nice they're inviting the community to be part of the building."

South Elgin resident Heather Nutile and her sixth-grade daughter, Arianna, also got the ink out.

"We're excited (for the branch), but we'll still come here, too," said the elder Nutile. "We came to retrieve those last books before school. I was happy to sign."
