Briefs: Foster to meet with seniors
U.S. Rep. Bill Foster will meet with senior citizens at the Riverain Point Apartments at 2 p.m. today to help explain how to apply for tax rebates. The workshop will run until 3 p.m. at: 200 N. Island Ave. in Batavia.
Lights out in St. Charles
Traffic signals will be out of service today at Dunham and Stearns roads in St. Charles Township while crews do beam work for the new bridge. Officials estimate the signals will be off between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Flaggers and police will direct traffic. Delays are expected. For more information, call (630) 845-7875.
Meet the Democrats
The Kane County Democratic Party is holding a fundraiser for candidates Tom Sandor for auditor, Ed Nendick for clerk of the circuit court, Frank Craig for recorder and Stan Hickrod for coroner. ECC, Roosevelt get joint grant
Elgin Community College and Roosevelt University were recently awarded a multiyear grant for $891,000 by the National Institutes of Health for the Bridges to Baccalaureate program. The partnership develops academic year programs at ECC and summer programs at Roosevelt, preparing minority students to transfer from ECC to four-year programs in the sciences.
Portion of Corron closed
Utility work being done on Corron Road in Plato Township will close the road between Bowes and McDonald roads through September. Traffic will be rerouted north and south to Dittman Road using Bowes, Plato, Burlington and Silver Glen roads as a result. For details on the project, call (630) 208-3138.
Torres' plan available online
Elgin Area School District U-46 Superintendent Jose Torres Listening and Learning plan is available online at the district's Web site, www.u-46.org. The plan, to be enacted within the first 90 days of his tenure, assesses three broad needs: raising the academic bar, closing the achievement gap and cultivating relationships.
