More attend health fair

The 16th annual Kids 1st Health Fair served 1,654 children from 718 families, a nearly 22 percent increase over the 1,356 children from 601 families served at the fair in 2007, organizers said. The Aug. 6 fair in Waukegan was sponsored by the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and the United Way of Lake County. Officials said they did not know the reason for the increase in attendees. The fair provided immunizations, dental screenings, physicals and other services for children to meet school health requirements. Providers gave 681 physicals, 496 dental exams, 296 lead tests, 231 diabetic screenings and provided immunizations to 288 children among other services. Roughly 1,470 children participated in an asthma survey. It detected 148 children with asthma symptoms who had previously not been diagnosed. Those children are being referred to private providers or health department clinics for further medical evaluation and treatment where needed.
