Prevent child abuse

A 75-mile motorcycle ride to raise funds to combat child abuse will depart at 11 a.m. today from Kids Hope United, 215 N. Milwaukee Ave., Lake Villa. The event will feature food and live music at the end of the alcohol-free ride. A registration fee of $15 per person or $20 per couple will support the programs and services of Kids Hope United, a private human services organization. The event corresponds with Lake Villa Days at Lehmann Park. Registration for the ride begins at 9:30 a.m. Call (847) 245-6503.

Pre-school screening

Pre-school screening for the 2008-09 school year for Wauconda Unit District 118 will be offered Aug. 27 and Sept. 8. Screening is open to all preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years who live within the district boundaries. The screening provides parents with information about their child's growth and development in terms of cognition, motor skills, speech, language, social and emotional aspects, vision and hearing. 50th Anniversary of the Lion's Club BBQ

Picnic and barbecue with the Antioch Lion's Club as they celebrate their 50th anniversary, Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The barbecue will be at Williams Park, behind the Antioch Public Library on Williams Road. Dinner tickets are available before the event for $8 at the Piggly Wiggly or the UPS store in Antioch. Tickets can be purchased the day of the event for $10. Bring your bathing suits and sun tan lotion because the Antioch Aqua Center will also offer free swimming from noon to 8 p.m. Other activities include: live auction by the Antioch Rescue Squad and a 50/50 cash raffle with three cash prizes. Chicken, fresh roasted sweet corn, hot dogs and bratwursts will be available. For information call (847) 838-2779.

New Woodland assistant principal:

Stacey Anderson recently was announced as Woodland Primary School's new assistant principal. She's been with Gurnee-based Woodland Elementary District 50 for 18 years in roles ranging from kindergarten teacher to information specialist focusing on technology integration. "I am eager to partner with Primary Principal Lori Casey, the staff and the parents in our joint quest to provide each child with a safe and exciting learning environment," Anderson said. She replaces Ana Fuhrer, who's departing the Primary School in Gages Lake to be new associate principal at Woodland Intermediate School in Gurnee.
