Briefs: Aurora teens face charges

Robert Burton III, 17, of the 2100 block of Charleston Lane, Aurora, and a 15-year-old Aurora boy each were charged with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after a gun was found about 7:20 p.m. Monday inside a park at Foxcroft and Elder drives. Aurora police were patrolling the park after receiving complaints of criminal activity and came across the two subjects who were with seven other teens. While speaking with them near some playground equipment, one of the officers, while searching for signs of drug use or other contraband, located a handgun inside one of the pieces of playground equipment. The other teens with Burton and the juvenile were released without charges after questioning. Burton was held for bond call, while the 15-year-old was taken to the youth home.

Plea in theft case

A former bookkeeper for Cass Elementary School District 63 admitted Tuesday to stealing about $100,000 in district funds. Renee A. Spuhler, 48, of Montgomery faces probation or up to 15 years in prison for felony theft charges. Prosecutors said Spuhler stole the money between August 2001 and October 2005 as compensation for money she felt she was due because of the extra hours she allegedly put in without being paid. Spuhler either used the district credit card, overpaid herself or issued herself duplicate paychecks. DuPage Circuit Judge Robert Anderson will sentence Spuhler, who is free on bond, later this year.
