Busy Elgin notching some wins
The Elgin Post 57 American Legion baseball team got off to a strong start this summer.
As host of the sixth annual Elgin Early Bird tournament, Post 57 went 3-1 and finished third.
Post 57 (3-1) opened play with a 13-3 slaughter rule victory over the Johnsburg Post 491 in five innings.
Post 57 pounding out 14 hits, including 2 home runs.
Joe Stace (2-for-2, homer 3 runs, 2 RBI), Justin Kalusa (2-for-3, homer, 2 RBI), Andy Deal (2-for-3, double, run scored, 2 RBI), Kyle Tourtellott (2-for-3, 2 runs) and Tyler Shore (2-for-4, RBI) led the way.
Shore, who played for Cary-Grove this spring, allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and earned the victory on the mound.
In Game 2, Highland Park Post 145 handed Elgin its lone tourney loss, a 7-3 decision.
Elgin's Tom Roth was a bright spot, hammering a towering home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Luc Geier took the loss, allowing 5 earned runs in 3 innings.
Post 57 bounced back for a 10-6 come-from-behind win over Wauconda Post 911.
Trailing 6-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Post 57 fought back.
Leading the way were Geier (2-for-2, triple, 3 runs) and Austin Jarvis (2-for-4, triple, 2 runs).
Stace (2 RBI), Tourtellott (2 RBI) and Ryan Burke (2b, 2 RBI) also contributed.
Burke earned the win. After giving up 6 runs in the first two innings, he settled down and threw 3 shutout innings and struck out five.
Elgin concluded the tournament by collecting a 1-0 forfeit win over Elmhurst Post 187.

Elgin 14, Johnsburg 4: Elgin out hit Johnsburg 18-7 en route to earning a 14-4 victory in nine innings.
Tom Roth got the start and allowed 3 runs in 2 innings.
Kent Larson, Bryan Bell, David Hartwell, George Heller and Andy Deal combined to pitch the final 7 innings, and collectively gave up just 1 run.
Elgin tied things at 3-3 in the third with Bell on the mound, and he was credited with the win.
Bell went 2-for-3 and scored 3 runs.
Deal (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Ryan Burke (3-for-5, triple, run scored, 2 RBI), Kyle Tourtellott (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Austin Jarvis (2-for-4, run scored, 2 RBI) paced the offense.
Elgin drops pair: Elgin fell to 4-3 after dropping a doubleheader against Wheaton Post 76 on June 14 by scores of 7-0 and 6-5.
With just 4 hits in the 7-0 loss, Ryan Burke scored twice. Burke (1-1) was on the mound and allowed 7 runs (6 earned) on 11 hits in 4½ innings.
Elgin tied the game 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning of Game 2 but allowed a run on 3 hits in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Shore (6½ innings, 9 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned) took the loss. Kyle Tourtellott (2-for-4, RBI) and Andy Deal (run, RBI) led the offense.
Elgin 8, Plainfield 4: Elgin (5-3) bounced back with an 8-4 win over Plainfield Post 1080. Luc Geier (4¿ IP, 2 runs) was on the hill for the victory, and was backed offensively by Kyle Tourtellott (3-for-4, 2 runs), Ryan Burke (3-for-5, run), Aldy Deal (2-for-4, double, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Joe Stace (2-for-5, double, run) and David Hartwell (2 RBI). Deal earned a save.
