The highlights have been plentiful, and they might not be done yet

Last week Kevin Schmit reported a chronological list of the top 10 moments for DuPage County boys high school athletics for the 2007-08 school year.

Let's close out the year with major achievements by the girls.

Oct. 18-20, 2007: MT. PROSPECT -- Extending its own record, Hinsdale Central wins its 10th state tennis tournament. It's a landslide, 50 points to 27 for the Red Devils' closest pursuer, Downers Grove South.

Bringing dynasty potential, coach Jerilyn Scardina's lineup features sophomores Hanna Mar, second in state singles play; and the doubles team of Courtney Dolehide and Nida Hamilton, who end the season with a 33-0 record and a second straight title.

Nov. 3, 2007: PEORIA -- Representing the county's stranglehold on cross country, Naperville North, Hinsdale Central and Neuqua Valley finish 3-4-5 in the team standings at the Class 3A state finals at Detweiller Park.

Hinsdale Central junior Elaine Kuckertz, sixth individually, joins fellow top-25 all-staters Sara Hartley and Megan Taylor of Neuqua Valley. Naperville North offers depth, including top finisher Michelle Stratton and the Schertz sisters -- Jamie, Adrienne and Erica.

Nov. 10, 2007: NORMAL -- At Illinois State's Redbird Arena, Naperville Central wins the Class 4A volleyball championship, 25-23, 25-22 over Mother McAuley. Emily McGee notches 13 kills, Megan McMahon 24 assists.

Finishing the season at 38-4, coach Brie Isaacson's Redhawks win their second state title in three seasons and the school's 11th athletic championship.

St. Francis' first venture into Class 3A volleyball ends the same day with a title loss to Crystal Lake Central.

Feb. 8, 2008: AURORA -- All 12 players score at least 2 points in Waubonsie Valley's 71-34 basketball victory over East Aurora, as the Warriors finish the Upstate Eight Conference schedule unbeaten at 10-0.

Waubonsie's first unbeaten conference slate since 1998-99 featured few close calls, notably a 52-50 squeaker over Lake Park on Jan. 18. The repeat UEC winners finished their season 26-3.

Feb. 21, 2008: LA GRANGE PARK -- In the Class 3A Nazareth sectional final, Montini's basketball team beats Hope, the No. 1 team in Chicagoland and No. 21 in the nation by USA Today, 58-51.

Ending Hope's 25-game winning streak, the eventual third-place trophy winner gets 18 points and 10 rebounds from center Michala Johnson, and 13 points from Alison Seberger. Guard Mallory Sosnovich goes 4 of 4 from the foul line in the last 17.3 seconds to seal the win.

April 20, 2008: BRIDGEVIEW -- In the first girls soccer game ever played at Toyota Park, in the championship game of the largest high school girls tournament in the country, Wheaton North beats New Trier 1-0 in overtime to win the 32-team Pepsi Showdown.

Sophomore Paige Fowler converts Allie Cerone's pass less than two minutes into overtime. Falcons senior Michelle Scandora is voted tournament MVP.

May 9-10, 2008: CHARLESTON -- Different racquet, different season. Same result.

At Eastern Illinois University's Lantz Field House, Hinsdale Central wins its first state badminton title.

Red Devils' two-time state singles winner Karishma Kollipara helps hold off Hinsdale South and doubles champs Deepa Ramadurai and Anjylla Foster to win 14-12.

May 16-17, 2008: CHARLESTON -- There was much local talent at the Class AA girls track and field state Finals at O'Brien Stadium -- Benet's Kelsey Ontko and McKinzie Schulz, Waubonsie Valley's Shakeia Pinnick, Lake Park's Lindsay Flanagan, etc.

But Neuqua Valley senior high jumper Monika Jakutyte was the only home girl to claim a state title. After Friday's preliminary attempts she was among 10 girls to clear the cut-off height of 5 feet, 3 inches. She continued climbing on Saturday, earning the title at 5-6.

May 31, 2008: NAPERVILLE -- Unbeaten in 58 games, Waubonsie Valley wins its second straight Class AA soccer title, 3-0 over Belleville Althoff at North Central College.

Lacking injured standout junior Bri Rodriguez, the nation's No. 3 squad improves to 26-0-1. Catherine McClellan, Vanessa DiBernardo and Megan Green score while Claire Hanold records her 64th career shutout.

June 7, 2008: EAST PEORIA -- Following Friday's state semifinal win over Mattoon, Glenbard South advances to the Class 3A softball championship … and wins handily for its first girls state title in school history.

In Class 4A, Lake Park comes off Friday's semifinal victory over Barrington with a convincing win in the state championship game. It's the Lancers' first state softball title after placing second in 2003 and fourth in 2005.

We can dream, can't we?
