Briefs: Algonquin chief out of hospital

Longtime Algonquin Police Chief Russell Laine, who had been battling double pneumonia for more than a month, is out of the hospital and undergoing rehabilitation to regain his physical strength, a family spokesman said Tuesday. Laine had been at Sherman Hospital in Elgin since April 15 fighting the lung infection and was transferred to a rehabilitation facility Monday. "We're just happy and hopeful that it's going to be a quick move along now," said Ignacio "Joe" Pena, the family's spokesman. Pena declined to name the rehabilitation facility, saying the Laines did not want that information disclosed.

Park dedication planned

Elgin's parks and recreation department and West Point Gardens subdivision have invited people to Day at the Gardens from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 8. West Point Gardens, at Route 20 and Nesler Road, opened in May 2006; there are more than 50 homes in the subdivision now. The event is free and will include the grand opening of 11-acre Meier Park as well as a sampling of Elgin's community groups, civic organizations and local businesses.
