False call at Mallard Lake

Crews found nothing after a woman called Friday night saying she saw a pollutant cloud hovering above the Mallard Lake landfill near Bloomingdale.

"It was nothing," said Hanover Park Fire Battalion Chief Battalion Chief Jeannine Ames. The call came in after 5:20 p.m. from the controversial site near Schick and County Farm roads where most of Bloomingdale's trash was stored over the last 25 year or so years.

The landfill, which opened in 1974 and accepted garbage until 1999, has been caught in several legal battles over pollution that was supposedly coming from the site.

Ames said her Hanover Park crews conducted tests Friday and left satisfied no danger was posed.
