Memorial Day events

Burlington: The Central High School Band of Pride will be creating a memorial garden of flags at 1 p.m. today at Central High School, Burlington. For $5, visitors can honor a person, whose name will be read aloud during a service. After each name is read, an American flag will be placed in the memorial garden. The service will conclude with the playing of Taps.

Crystal Lake: The Crystal Lake American Legion Post will hold a Memorial Day parade and cemetery service today. Parade units will assemble at the Crystal Lake Central High School parking lot at 10 a.m. and the parade will begin at 11 a.m. The parade route will be east on Franklin Avenue, north on Williams Street, and west on Woodstock Street to Union Cemetery, where the cemetery service will be held. Elgin:ŒA variety of Memorial Day services are planned in Elgin today.

• 8:45 a.m. Mount Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa St. American Legion and VFW color guard and rifle followed by Catholic Mass.

• 9:15 a.m. Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 Route 20. Guard of Honor, American Legion and VFW color guard and rifle squad.

• 9:45 a.m. Highland Avenue Bridge Service, downtown Elgin. Rifle salute and Taps conducted by Elgin Marine Corp League and Elgin Navy Club and Northern Kane County VietNow.

• 11 a.m. Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd. Presented by Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association. Reading of General Logan's General Order #11, the Gettysburg Address, roll call of the deceased, floral tributes, raising of the flag, rifle salute and Taps.

Fox River Grove: American Legion Post 119 will hold a Memorial Day parade and ceremony today, starting at Algonquin Road School, 975 Algonquin Road, Fox River Grove. The parade steps off at 8:30 a.m.

Huntley:ŒMemorial Day parade steps off at 11 a.m. today at the new village hall at Main Street and Ruth Road, then proceeds west on Main Street to the downtown square for a brief program and color guard ceremony. Members of the 8th Illinois Cavalry, a mounted Civil War re-enactment group, will participate. Afterward, a free hot dog lunch will be served at the American Legion Hall. West Dundee: Memorial Day service at River Valley Memorial Gardens, Route 31, West Dundee, (just north of Alexander's Restaurant) will be at 11:30 a.m. today. The Rev. Timothy Doherty of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church will speak. Dundee Tri-Cities VFW Post 2298 and Auxiliary will participate in the half-hour service honoring more than 690 Veterans buried at River Valley Memorial Gardens. Dundee-Crown High School trumpeters will play the national anthem and Taps.
