Briefs: Library awards announced
The DuPage Library System will be honoring librarians, library staff and community advocates at an upcoming awards banquet. The event will be held at 6 p.m. June 3 at the Warrenville Public Library, 28W751 Stafford Place. Dan and Midge Anderson of Glen Ellyn will receive the Friends of the Library Award for their work with the Glen Ellyn library. NancyLee Browne, a Wheaton resident, was named Support Staff Award winner for her work with the Kane County Law Library & Self Help Legal Center. Bensenville librarian Kelly Watson is the Librarian of the Year Award winner.
Deputy receives award
A corporal at the DuPage County sheriff's office was named the 2008 Crime Stopper Coordinator of the Year by the state association. Daniel Dorpat was given the award at the group's recent convention in Quincy. Dorpat is a 13-year veteran of the department and has been heading up the sheriff's Crime Stoppers program for the past three years. Dorpat was recognized for the extra investigative work he adds to leads he receives from tips generated by the non-profit program that offers rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to arrests of wanted suspects.
Advocacy Center moves
The Citizen Advocacy Center is holding an open house at 6 p.m. June 5 to familiarize the community with the group's new Elmhurst offices at 182 N. York Road. The non-profit, non-partisan legal organization has been operating in the county since 1994. For more information, call (630) 833-4080.
Driver pleads innocent
A Darien man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges in a wreck near Huntley that killed a brother and sister, Kane County prosecutors said. Gustavo Gomez, 45, is accused of reckless homicide in the Jan. 24 crash on Route 47 near Oak Creek Parkway. Sergio Espinoza, 52, and Rosalina Rodriguez, 58, both of Elgin, died when their car was hit by a box truck driven by Gomez. Police have said Gomez was speeding to beat a changing traffic light when he hit a 2004 Hyundai broadside in the intersection. Gomez, who is free on bail, is due in court again July 17.
West Chicago truck event
The West Chicago Police Department and West Chicago Park District will host a Touch-a-Truck event on May 31 at Reed Keppler Park from 9 to 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Turtle Splash Water Park. Children will have an opportunity to look at, sit in or climb on trucks and equipment from the city's public works and police departments, as well as the local fire protection district and multiple local businesses. Free hot dogs and Italian ice will be served and other promotional items will be available at the event. Admission is free.
