Fremd 3, Prospect 0
After suffering her first defeat in seven decisions less than a week ago, Fremd junior pitcher Casey Latal was hardly fazed.
The junior right-hander came back with a 3-0 shutout and 4-hitter against visiting Prospect in Wednesday's Mid-Suburban League second-place softball crossover.
"We played great defense (no errors) and Casey pitched real well," said Fremd coach Jim Weaver, whose club raised its best record in school history to 25-3.
Kelly Voigt (2-for-3, 1 run) and Alexa Cinquegrani (2-for-3, 1 run, double) led the Vikings' offense against Sheri Weidner (17-8) and the Knights (17-10).
The Vikings scored twice in the first inning on a 2-run single by Lauren Zaworski bringing home Kristine Werling (single) and Voigt.
Jessica Tackett added an RBI single in the fourth which scored Cinquegrnai for the final run.
Hoffman 2, Hersey 1 (17 innings): Hoffman junior ace Kaitlin Walsh struck out 27 while throwing 255 pitches in the marathon as the host Hawks (9-19-1) won on their Senior's Day.
Walsh's 27 strikeouts are the most by a Mid-Suburban League pitcher according to IHSA record books. Elk Grove's Megan Huitink had 20 in an extra-inning in 2002.
The 27 strikeouts is also the 19th most in a single-game in IHSA history.
The record is 38 held by Karen Marie Pena of Rock Island Alleman on May 1, 1999 in a 22-inning game.
Senior Jenna Pellus singled to open the bottom of the 17th and went to second on Alex Wulbecker's base hit. Pellus took third on Natalie Miceli's fielder's choice and scored on her freshman sister Kelsey's single to left.
Miceli's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at 1-1.
Sophomore Alyssa Kieffer had a two-out RBI single for Hersey (8-21) in the fourth.
Huskies senior Mallory Donoghue went all 17 innings, striking out five and walking none.
"Our seniors came through on Senior's Day," said Hoffman coach Lindsey Hamma.
Palatine 7, Meadows 6: Designated player Rebecca Griffin (2-for-4) belted a line drive single to right center with one out in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Anne Wcislo scored the run which capped a 3-run rally for the hosts (16-8).
Wcislo's single had closed the deficit to 6-5 and Steph Roto's sacrifice fly to right tied it at 6-6. Joanne Jablonski had a single in the big inning, too.
Chrissy Roto (4-3) worked the final two innings in relief of Wcislo to earn the win.
Other top hitters for the Pirates were Nikki Linares (3-for-4), Amy Modic (2-for-4), Bre Quaritsch (2-for-4, 2 doubles) and Wcislo (2-for-4). Stephanie Roto and Caitlin Carpenter added doubles.
Caitlin Adair doubled for the Mustangs (12-15).
BG 5, Schaumburg 4: K.C. Dunne (3-for-4), Katie Lee (3-for-4), Andrea DiPrima (3-for-4) and Lexi Bueno (3-for-4) led the offense for the Bison (19-13), who led 5-0 after 4 innings.
Freshman Emily Begnel (5-1) went 5¿ innings for the win while DiPrima came in for the save.
Brittany Hill was 2-for-3 for the Saxons (10-15), who received a double from Nicole Chase.
Conant 8, Wheeling 3: Junior Georgia Kutramanes belted a double with 2 runs and her twin sister Tricia put down 2 perfect sacrifice bunts as host Conant (6-18) won its second straight game.
The Cougars received a 6-hitter from freshman Kailee Pasbrig, who struck out four and walked one.
Tori Menelle had a double for Wheeling (8-19).
Elmwood Park 5, Maine W. 4:ŒCaryn McGinley went 3-for-3 with an RBI for visiting Maine West (21-5) while freshman pitcher Amanda Wessell (4-1) struck out one.
