Briefs: Criminal sex abuse alleged
A 21-year-old Hanover Park man was charged Monday with aggravated criminal sexual abuse in a case that has been open for more than a year, police said. Jonel Taveras of the 800 block of Lexington Circle, was arrested Monday at the Hanover Park police station after he arrived at the station for questioning, Deputy Police Chief David Webb said. Authorities released few additional details, other than that the victim of the alleged abuse was a juvenile and that police began investigating the incident more than a year ago. Taveras is scheduled to appear in court again on May 30 in Rolling Meadows, Webb said.
Cops on the rooftops Friday
For the sixth year, Northwest suburban police will stake out Dunkin' Donuts rooftops Friday to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. From 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. police officers will take donations for the 23rd annual Law Enforcement Torch Run from the roofs of various Dunkin' Donuts locations. You can find them Friday at five Northwest suburban stores: 122 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights; 1001 S. Busse Road, Mount Prospect; 253 E. Police checking for safety
The Wheeling and Buffalo Grove police departments will conduct child safety seat inspections and installations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Target parking lot at 1400 E. Lake-Cook Road, Wheeling. The Wheeling Wal-Mart has provided a number of discounted child-safety seats, which officers can distribute to families in financial difficulty. Parents or grandparents who transport young children in their vehicles are encouraged to attend to assure that their child-safety seats are properly installed and in good working order. Technicians also will check seats for any recalls that may be in effect. Child fingerprinting services will be provided by crime prevention officers.
Walk for Kenneth Young
Kenneth Young Center will sponsor its fundraiser walk on Saturday at Busse Woods near Elk Grove Village. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. start time. There is no registration fee. Walkers are encouraged to collect sponsorships for their 5K walk, which starts and ends on the Higgins Road overpass in Busse Woods. Music, food and games will be available. Auto show rescheduled
Prospect High School has rescheduled its first auto for Saturday. Last weekend's event was rained out. The show will be from noon to 4 p.m. at the high school, 801 W. Kensington Road. The show will raise funds for the auto department at the school. Cars will range from a 1965 Ferrari to a 2004 Ford Mustang.
Orchestra gives concert
The Northwest Festival Orchestra spring concert is 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Performing Arts Center of Harper College, 1200 Algonquin Road, Palatine. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 for adults and $15 for students. Joining more than 60 professional musicians will be soprano Kimberly Beasley, mezzo soprano Sarah Ponder, tenor Jamie Dahman, baritone Charles Martin and cellist Deanna Talens.
Rosemont levies cab fee
Starting May 16, Rosemont will impose a gas surcharge for cab trips starting in the village. Trustees on Wednesday approved the extra fee. Patrons will be charged an extra $1 if the gas average is at least $3.20. The charge will be 50 cents if gas averages $2.70 to $3.19. Rosemont residents won't have to pay the extra fee. A Rosemont hotel guest, however, would get the extra charge on the trip to O'Hare International Airport.
