Prospect 3, Elk Grove 0
In probably the windiest day of the spring, Prospect's softball team lost 3-1 to Elk Grove two weeks ago in Mount Prospect.
The wind died down for Monday's rematch and Prospect's motivation went up.
"We wanted to avenge that loss," said Knights senior shortstop Amy Varner. "They beat us on our field so were wanted to do the same on theirs."
Varner made sure she had some input in that goal Monday by smacking a two-out, 2-run triple to right field in the top of the fifth, capping a 3-run rally which stood for the final score.
The Knights' 3-0 win gave them an 8-4 record in the Mid-Suburban East, 1½ games behind Elk Grove (23-4, 10-3).
"If I could put Elk Grove and Barrington on our schedule for every game, our mindset would always be where it should be," said Prospect coach Brenda Martin, whose team (14-8) also topped the MSL West-leading Fillies 5-1 this spring.
Paige O'Neil led off the Knights' big inning with an infield hit and went to second on Lisa Dominick's sacrifice.
Sheri Weidner singled to give the Knights first and third before pinch runner Katie Dillon scored on Jessie King's fielder choice.
Elk Grove out-hit Prospect 8-6.
"Everyone was hitting," said Grens third baseman Kayla Mahoney. "We just didn't hit at the right time."
"We left too many runners (12) on base, especially early in the game," said Elk Grove coach Ken Grams. "We had runners in scoring position five times and never cashed in. They had runners in scoring position twice, and scored in one inning.
"Now, we can't stumble the rest of the way."
Weidner (14-6) struck out four and walked one while Grens sophomore Stephanie Maday (15-3) struck out two .
"We found our defense (1 error) again," Martin said. "We got out of a lot of tough situations.
"We had great plays in centerfield (Paige O'Neil's catch near the fence to rob Stephanie Dolce in the seventh) and third base (Emily Logar caught a hard grounder and stepped on third for a force out to end sixth inning). And Amy made a few good plays at short."
The hosts had the bases loaded with one out in the third when Weidner escaped with a pair of popups to Varner.
"And Sheri pitched an unbelievable game." Martin said.
"We wanted to gain confidence for our sectional because we know Elk Grove is one of the top seeds in there," Varner added "Every girl in our dugout wanted to win this game. We really stepped up."
Palatine 4, Barrington 2: After falling at Barrington three weeks ago 10-0 in five innings, the host Pirates showed how far they have come as junior Anne Wcislo (10-4) finished the game with two strikeouts in the top of the seventh.
The host Pirates (12-7, 8-4) got a 3-0 lead in the third, thanks to Amy Modic's sacrifice fly to right (Heather Zimmerman scored) and a 2-run triple by Joanne Jablonski that one-hopped the right field fence.
Nikki Linares (2-for-3, 1 run) and pinch runner Michelle Dellamaria scored.
Barrington cut it to 3-2 in the fifth when Devinne Wapotish doubled with two outs and Michal Jane Maropis (2-for-4, 2 RBI) followed with a 2-run homer.
Palatine capped the scoring in the sixth when Jablonski (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 run) singled to short right-center, went to second on Bre Quaritsch's sacrifice and scored when Wcislo reached on an infield throwing error.
Kim Cygan (20-6) struck out two for the Fillies (21-6, 11-2).
Pirates coached Jeff Manz credited his defense.
In the sixth, right fielder Steph Roto tracked down a ball near the fence, threw the relay to shortstop Zimmerman, who threw to third baseman Modic to catch the runner.
In the same inning, first baseman Quaritsch threw to catcher Caitlin Carpenter, who made the tag for the final out.
"We had some huge defensive plays," Manz said. "And Anne (Wcislo) has been on fire."
