Briefs: Fire at N. Aurora factory

A piece of magnesium containing metal overheated while being machined and caught fire around 6:25 a.m. Friday at Aurora Pump Co., 800 N. Randall Road, North Aurora. Workers extinguished the fire, said North Aurora Fire Chief Steve Miller. Nobody was hurt.

Music Matters party

The Music Matters music school, at 222 E. Wilson St. in Batavia, will hold its second annual parade party to coincide with the Loyalty Day parade at 1 p.m. Sunday. Elburn flushes hydrants

The village of Elburn will be flushing hydrants from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. beginning Monday and continuing through May 15. Signs will be posted throughout the village to alert residents which streets will be affected. Avoid doing laundry during these hours. If you have questions, call public works at (630) 365-5064.

Painted violins on display:

The painted violins from the Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance will be on display through May 16 at the Naperville Art League, 508 N. Center St., Naperville. The exhibit is a prescreening for the academy's June 28 fund-raising auction during a Salute to America concert at the Paramount Arts Center in Aurora. Call (630) 355-2530 for more.

School gets recognition

Wheaton Academy has been named to the list of Best Christian Workplaces by the Best Christian Workplaces Institute, a human resources consulting firm based on Mercer Island, Wash. In a survey administered by the agency, more than 7,834 employees across the country were used to identify great workplaces with a Christian mission. This is the third time the West Chicago school has been recognized by the group.

Orchestra seeks musicians

DuPage Symphony Orchestra is looking for musicians for its summer season, which includes three concert programs that will be presented in downtown Naperville and at Cantigny Park near Wheaton. The orchestra has openings in all string sections and in selected woodwind, brass and percussion sections. Auditions will be held by appointment May 15 to 30. The orchestra rehearses weekly. District 94 seeks nominees

West Chicago High School District 94 is seeking nominees for a new Hall of Honor established to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the school, community or society.
