Wrap: Eagles run to Prairie crown
Lakes' girls track and field team made some school history Tuesday.
The Eagles wrapped up the first North Suburban Conference Prairie Division championship in its three years as a program thanks to a 104-33 win over Vernon Hills.
Lakes went undefeated in the NSC Prairie.
Melissa Lewis and Kecia Morway each won three individual events for the Eagles. Lewis captured the 100-meter high hurdles (17.4), high jump (5-0) and triple jump (29-10). Morway sprinted to first-place finishes in the 100 (13.1), 400 (62.8) and 200 (27.0) dashes.
Boys track
Stevenson d. Mundelein: The Patriots received a pair of individual wins from both Tyler Bartlow and Derek Chmielewski in edging the Mustangs 74-72.
Bartlow won the 3,200-meter run (9:57.9) and 1,600 (4:43.6). Chmielewski had winning tosses in the discus (134-4) and shot put (44-5½).
Mundelein's Adam Bassett captured the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (41-4).
Softball
Wauconda 7, Lakes 6: Amanda Pausa went 3-for-4 and Stephanie Olson was 2-for-2, as the Bulldogs overcame a 4-2 deficit to hand the Eagles their second loss in North Suburban Prairie Division play.
Wauconda (11-7, 4-2) got doubles from Kate Martino, Cara Nance and Alex Manusos. Sara Super pitched 5 innings for the win.
Shannon Cooley hit a 2-run homer over the left-field fence for Lakes (11-9, 5-2), which committed 4 errors in Wauconda's 3-run sixth inning. Maddie Nelson was 2-for-4 for the Eagles.
Stevenson 1, Lake Forest 0: Genny Duffy pitched a complete-game 2-hitter for the visiting Patriots in North Suburban Lake Division action
Erica Castriano scored the game's only run for Stevenson (13-9, 5-2) in the fifth on a throwing error. She had drawn a two-out walk and then got hung up between second and third on Claire Kirchner's single. When the ball was thrown into left field, Castriano scored.
Tovah Schwartz had 2 singles and a walk for the Patriots.
Grayslake North 7, Grayslake Central 6: The Knights pounded out 15 hits, including three apiece by Amanda Leon and Sam Fletcher, in the Fox Valley Fox Division game.
Grayslake North (7-11, 3-4) received 2 hits each from Carly Borders, Cassie Johnson (double) and Kelly Noesen.
Grayslake Central got a 2-run home run from Abbie Goetsche in the bottom of the seventh to pull within a run.
Warren 4, Libertyville 3: Nicole Bohn's 2-RBI single highlighted a 3-run third, as the Blue Devils overcame a 2-1 deficit to win the North Suburban Lake Division game.
Winning pitcher Sam Berrios struck out 10 and walked two. Kellie Kraft had a double for Warren (13-10, 5-3).
Antioch 20, N. Chicago 0: Alyssa Cook struck out 10 batters in 4 innings to lead the Sequoits in North Suburban Prairie Division action.
Antioch improved to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the NSC Prairie.
Lake Zurich 6, Waukegan 2: Coryn Schmit hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning to give the Bears the nonconference win.
Schmit finished 2-for-5 with 5 RBI. Ella Aslan and Kyra Boyer both went 2-for-3 for Lake Zurich. Brittany Stezskal had a double. Katie Buczynski pitched 4 no-hit innings with 12 strikeouts in relief to earn the win.
Baseball
Mundelein 8, Zion-Benton 2: Eric Rohe improved to 9-0 and Alex Ahonen and Brad Medina were both 3-for-4 for the Mustangs, who remain atop the North Suburban Lake Division.
Mundelein (19-2, 6-1) got 2 hits apiece from Colton Tortorello, Jamie Baldwin and Dillon Smith. Ahonen tripled, and Tortorello and Medina doubled.
Rohe threw 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out seven.
Carmel 4, Notre Dame 3: The Corsairs spotted the visitors a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but slowly chipped away at their deficit.
They scored a run in the sixth to tie and another run in the seventh to win the East Suburban Catholic Conference game.
Brian Siedlecki had 3 hits for Carmel (15-2, 6-2), while Joe Pudlo added a pair. Donald Stopka had a double, and Jordan Sivertsen pitched a complete game for the victory.
Lakes 7, Wauconda 5: Travis VanderWall's solo homer to center field in the top of the fifth snapped a 3-3 tie, giving the Eagles the lead for good in the North Suburban Prairie Division game.
Andrew Highland, Randy Ratajczyk, Kyle Frye and D.J. Szuhay (2 doubles) each had a pair of hits for Lakes (11-7, 5-2). Tim Ryan scattered 10 hits over 6 innings, while striking out seven, to earn the win.
Wauconda (7-9, 1-4) was led offensively by Adam Tagli, who went 4-for-4. Jimmy Williams homered and singled for the Bulldogs, who also got 2 hits from both Jamey Carey and Eric Johnson.
Lake Forest 9, Stevenson 0: Patriots starting pitcher Scott Firth lasted only 3 innings, allowing 8 runs (3 earned).
Stevenson fell to 10-10 overall and 4-3 in the North Suburban Lake Division.
Vernon Hills 9, Round Lake 0: Keith Kamman pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits.
P.J. Marsek went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI to lead the way offensively for the Cougars, who improved to 4-1 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.
Vernon Hills got 2 doubles from Zack Schwartz and 2 singles from Zack Freibrun. Ryan Jordan had a single and 3 RBI.
Grayslake North 4, Grayslake Central 3: The Knights pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to edge their cross-town rival.
Grayslake North (6-10, 2-4 Fox Valley Fox) received 2 hits apiece from Nick Harrington and Tim Elias.
Brandon Schroth pitched 2½ innings in relief to earn the win.
Antioch 13, N. Chicago 3: Logan Kent had 2 home runs and 6 RBI for the Sequoits in the North Suburban Prairie Division game.
Alec Paramski also homered and knocked in a pair for Antioch (9-7, 7-1). Winning pitcher Tom Sears had a double and 3 RBI. Paramski and Sears had 2 hits total, as well.
Girls water polo
Mundelein 12, Schaumburg 8: On Senior Night, Kristen Aucutt scored 4 goals, and Ali Fedro and Alice Denny added three apiece for the Mustangs.
Girls soccer
Carmel 1, Wauconda 0: Sara Petermann scored her 23rd goal of the season for the Corsairs in the nonconference match. Kassidy Brown had her 11th assist.
Carmel improved to 15-1.
Antioch 9, N. Chicago 0: Susie O'Connor had 2 goals and an assist for the Sequoits, who improved to 10-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.
Antioch also got goals from Kelly Pish, Sara Knupp, Christine Kwilosz, Alisa Walizer, Yasmine Bessette, Kia Miller and Kalli Krumpos. Kwilosz and Krumpos each had 2 assists.
