From the Armed Forces

• Army Pvt. Jim E. Dubberke has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

He is the son of Jim Dubberke of Evergreen Park and Donna Dubberke of Cary.

• Coast Guard Seaman Jacob M. Frane, son of Darcie and Michael Frane of Harvard, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N. J.

During the eight-week training program, Frane completed a vigorous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship. A major emphasis also is placed on physical fitness, health and wellness.

Frane and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard's core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Frane will join 36,000 other men and women who comprise Coast Guard's force.

Men and women train together from the first day in the Coast Guard just as they do aboard ships and shore units throughout the world. To reinforce the team concept, Frane, and other recruits were trained in preventing sexual harassment, drug and alcohol awareness, civil rights training and the basics of the work-life balance, as well as total quality management.

Frane is a 2004 graduate of Harvard High School.

• Air Force Airman 1st Class Brian K. Freund has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Gregory Freund of Wonder Lake. Freund is a 2007 graduate of McHenry West High School.

• Marine Corps Reserve Pvt. Jeremy A. Gay, son of Donna Dragon of Apex, N. C. and David Gay of Crystal Lake, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

Gay and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a. m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Gay spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training.

Gay and other recruits also received instruction on the Marine Corps' ore values of honor, courage and commitment, and what the core values mean in guiding personal and professional conduct.

Gay and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as "Marines" for the first time in their careers.
