Briefs: Rabid vermin found in Cary
Two rabid bats were found last week in Cary, according to the McHenry County Department of Health. A family that was exposed to one of the bats is being vaccinated; no one was exposed to the second bat. The rabid bats were the first two found in the county this year. The first rabid bat reported in the county last year was found in June. McHenry County reported a record number of rabid bats last year -- 13 -- as did Illinois, with 113 reported cases. Bats are the primary carriers of rabies in Illinois. Rabies is almost always fatal when not treated within 10 days of exposure. Residents who find a bat should call (815) 459-6222.
