Wrap: DeRue 'da man' for Grayslake C.
Kevin DeRue is new.
He's new to varsity baseball this season, anyway.
The sophomore's been pitching like a veteran, however. He did again Wednesday, firing a complete-game 3-hitter to lead visiting Grayslake Central to a 3-0 win over Crystal Lake Central in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division play.
DeRue fanned eight and walked two in running his record to 3-0, while lowering his team-best ERA to 1.05.
The Rams (12-4, 2-1) scored all of their runs after two were out in the seventh.
Pinch hitter Angelo Gargano singled and Jackson White followed with his fourth hit of the game. Nick Tielke then singled to score pinch runner Andrew Weinert.
Matt Schmidt singled home White, and Tielke raced home on a wild pitch.
Lakes 7, Elmwood Park 0: Randy Ratajczyk fired a 4-hit shutout with 5 strikeouts in the nonconference game.
Ratajczyk helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with a double. Lakes (8-7) also received 2-for-4 efforts from Andrew Highland (triple, 2 runs), Kyle Frye (triple) and Travis VanderWall (double, RBI).
Libertyville 14, Lake Forest 6: Joey Aiello went 3-for-4 with a triple, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, as the Wildcats won their fourth in a row.
Tom Jacobson doubled twice for Libertyville (10-7), while Louis Educate went 2-for-2 with a double and 2 runs scored. Tim Matheson also had a triple.
Brooks McDowell pitched 3½ innings in relief to earn the win. The Wildcats saw Lake Forest score 6 runs in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 6-6, but responded with 3 runs in the fifth and 5 in the sixth.
Lake Zurich 4, Grant 1: Penn State-bound Joey DeBernardis pitched a complete-game 4-hitter, allowing no earned runs. He struck out four in the North Suburban Conference crossover.
Reid Bergstrom went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI for Lake Zurich (12-5). Bergstrom had a bases-loaded double with two out in the top of the fourth to snap a 1-1 tie.
Wauconda 5, Warren 4: Jamey Carey homered and singled for the Bulldogs in the North Suburban Conference crossover.
Sean Kennedy was 4-for-4 with a double for Warren. Ryan Pyles went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Mark Lavery and Mike McCann also doubled for the Blue Devils.
Prairie Ridge 8, Grayslake N. 5: Nick Harrington was 2-for-4 and Clay Henricksen had a single and 2 RBI for the Knights, who fell to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.
Carmel 12, St. Viator 0: The Corsairs defeated the visiting Lions for the second time in three days, receiving 2 hits apiece from Brian Siedlecki, Donald Stopka, David Venegoni and John Zeffery.
Stopka and Venegoni had doubles. Jeff Moree earned the win, as Carmel improved to 11-2 overall and 3-2 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
Softball
Stevenson 2, Zion-Benton 1: Annelise Docel's sacrifice fly scored Tovah Schwartz, who had tripled with one out, in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie.
Jordan Willis pitched 3 innings in relief to earn the win for the Patriots, who improved to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the North Suburban Lake Division.
Zion-Benton dropped its seventh straight game.
Rebekah Ozga's groundout drove in Schwartz in the fourth to tie the score. Schwartz had 2 of Stevenson's 3 hits.
Carmel 14, St. Viator 0: The Corsairs received 2 hits apiece from Caitlin Hendricks (triple), Katie Cornell, Shea Crowley and Meg Grady in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game. Claire Anastos singled and scored three times.
Rachel Tack pitched a 5-inning 1-hitter.
Carmel even its record at 7-7 overall and moved to 3-6 in the ESCC.
CL South 5, Grayslake C. 0: Alison Johnson had a double for the Rams' lone hit.
Boys volleyball
Warren d. Lake Forest: Ryan Schuette slammed 13 kills, as the Blue Devils rallied for a 25-20, 30-32, 27-25 win.
Mike McGowan added 9 kills for Warren, which improved to 27-2 overall and 5-0 in the North Suburban Conference.
Jeff Halvorsen dished 23 assists and Mike McNally tallied 9 blocks for the Blue Devils. Derrick Norris chipped in 6 kills and 5 blocks, while Gordon Booker and Halvorsen each recorded 10 digs.
Libertyville d. Zion-Benton: Matt Anderson had 9 kills, and Tom Hannum and Chris Risley added eight apiece, as the Wildcats prevailed 25-23, 20-25, 25-22 in North Suburban Conference action.
Libertyville (6-7, 4-2) also got 7 kills from Jack Matthews and 8 blocks from Risley.
Antioch d. Lakes: Eric Smith pounded 7 kills, as the Sequoits won 25-22, 25-17 in the North Suburban Conference.
Kyle Sytsma and Jeff Sprague lofted 8 and 6 assists, respectively. Sam Potkonjak added 5 kills, Sprague slammed four, and Andre Sippy recorded 4 blocks.
Mundelein d. North Chicago: Nick Faghihi registered 6 kills, and John McElligott and Mitchell Baumgartner recorded five apiece, as the Mustangs won 25-20, 25-18.
Patrick Lentz had 3 blocks, and Tim Tokarz served 3 aces and dished out 16 assists for Mundelein, which improved to 9-13 overall and 2-3 in the North Suburban Conference.
Girls soccer
Lakes 2, Wauconda 0: Alex Neal's goal with 10 minutes left broke a scoreless tie, as the Eagles won for the eighth time in nine games.
Sophia Khawaja scored on a free kick with about two minutes to go, securing the North Suburban Prairie Division win for Lakes (8-6, 4-0). Sarah Fitzpatrick made 8 saves in recording the shutout.
Wauconda fell to 9-3-2.
Vernon Hills 7, Round Lake 0: Lauren Clatch scored 3 goals in the first half and added a second-half assist for the Cougars in the North Suburban Prairie Division match.
Jessica Feece, Jenny Manhard and Kelly Nagle also scored.
Grayslake C. 2, Johnsburg 1: Megan LeBaron and Rachel Culp scored first-half goals for the Rams (7-6).
Maggie Klees and Kat Dickson shared the shutout.
Boys track
Carmel d. Benet, St. Patrick: On Tuesday, the Corsairs made it 75 consecutive dual-meet victories -- but it wasn't easy.
Carmel's 76 points were just 2 more than Benet. St. Patrick (33) was a distant third.
The Corsairs' relays proved big. They won the 3,200 (8:30.5) with Frank Huschitt, Nick Sturm, Matt Defiore and Joe Jeka; the 400 (44.9) with Socrates Kaitson, Dan Meegan, James Halford and Justin Campbell; the 800 (1:34.2) with Brett Roessler, Campbell, Jimmy Miller and Meegan; and the 1,600 (3:36.3) with Defiore, Campbell, Matt Berg and Matt Michel.
Jordan Nasenbeny won a pair of individual events for the Corsairs, taking the 100 (11.3) and 400 (53.2).
Carmel also received wins from Cameron Rieger in the 3,200 (9:55.7) and Mike Zegar in the discus (131-10).
