Wrap: Grayslake C. jolts Johnsburg
Grayslake Central racked up 11 hits in earning an 11-5 baseball victory over Johnsburg on Monday.
Kevin DeRue finished with 3 hits, including a double while Sean Seiler, Mike Gentile, Angelo Gargano , Kurt Schmidt and Jordan Williams all doubled.
"Our six through nine hitters combined for 9 hits today and that's encouraging when you get that type of production from the bottom of the order," said Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen, whose team moves to 11-4.
Pitcher Aaron Snyder went five innings to get his third win of the season. He rolled up 6 strikeouts.
Carmel 6, St. Viator 2:Ĺ’Carmel got 3 hits from Jordan Sivertsen, including a double, en route to the East Suburban Catholic Conference victory.
Carmel moves to 10-2 overall and 2-2 in the ESCC.
Winning pitcher Joe Pudlo went the distance.
Lake Zurich 16, Round Lake 2: Talk about well balanced. The victorious Bears got 10 hits and each one was from a different player.
Joey DeBernardis crushed his eighth home run of the season, a 2-run shot.
The Bears also got a double from Reid Bergstrom.
Pitcher Dan Zummo got the win. He struck out five in 5 innings.
Libertyville 19, Wauconda 4:Ĺ’Libertyville had a 9-run sixth inning and pounded out 20 hits en route to the victory.
The Wildcats tallied 6 doubles -- 2 from Tim Matheson and Jeremy Butler and one apiece from Chase Guarnaccio and Louis Educate.
Educate got the win on the mound.
Wauconda also had quite a few doubles.
Adam Tagli had 2 doubles and Matt Machon and Kyle Tanzillo each had one.
Highland Park 12, Vernon Hills 8: Down 12-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Vernon Hills could have completely thrown in the towel.
But the Cougars managed to score 6 runs to at least make things interesting.
What hurt Vernon Hills was leaving nine runners stranded earlier in the game.
Nathan Moraton led the Courgars with 3 hits while PJ Marsek and Ryan Jordan each had 2 hits.
Softball
Grayslake N. 3, Grayslake C. 1: In the crosstown rivalry game, the Knights came out on top.
Winning pitcher Sam Myers rolled up 11 strikeouts while Sam Fletcher and Amanda Leon each had 2 hits, including one double each.
Lake Zurich 3, Warren 0: Katie Buczynski shut down Warren in North Suburban Conference Lake Division action.
The Lake Zurich pitcher allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk. Meanwhile, she struck out nine.
Offensively, the Bears (11-2, 5-0 NSC Lake) got a big day out of Chrissie Wichmann, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Jessie Borre added 2 hits.
Warren drops to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the Lake.
Wauconda 4, Richmond Burton 1: Winning pitcher Kayla Stos went the distance and struck out four and allowed just 2 walks for the Bulldogs.
Antioch 10, Mundelein 2: Ashley Mysliwiec belted 2 home runs and drove in 3 runs to lead the Sequoits, who move to 9-4 overall.
Winning pitcher Jamie Villalobos rolled up 3 strikeouts and Lindsay Callanan came up with some big plays in centerfield.
St. Viator 4, Carmel 3: St. Viator rallied from a 3-0 deficit to get the win.
Kelly Gerli had 2 hits for Carmel.
Lakes splits with Grant: On Saturday, Grant and Lakes played two tight games.
Grant won the opener, 6-5 while Lakes got a 2-0 shutout in the finale.
In the first game, Maddie Riordan, Shannon Cooley and Andrea Fullerton each had 2 hits for Lakes.
In the second game, Lakes pitcher Hannah Karstedt struck out 4 batters and allowed only 2 hits.
The Eagles (7-8 overall, 3-1 North Suburban Prairie) got 2 hits from Riordan.
Girls soccer
Lakes 2, Belvidere North 0: Lakes scored early and then late to turn back Belvidere North.
Brittany Mooney scored 10 minutes into the game and then Alex Neal scored with 10 minutes left in the game for the Eagles, who move to 6-6.
Antioch 1, Wauconda 0: A quick strike after halftime was all Antioch needed.
Jenna Krumpos scored 41 seconds into the second half on a Susie O'Connor assist.
Goalkeeper Katie Budd had 5 saves for the Sequoits (8-2-2, 3-0-1 North Suburban Prairie) and got her eighth shutout of the season.
Boys tennis
Grayslake Central d. Antioch: The Rams won 5-0 and swept every match.
Mitch Granger led the way by getting a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Garrett Anderson in the No. 1 singles match.
The top doubles team of Jon Yee and Tim Schultz took down Dylan Haley and Cody England.
Lake Forest Acad. d. VH: In a 4-2 defeat, Vernon Hills was pinned with 4 losses in straight sets. But the 2 wins also came in straight sets.
Sam Rong defeated Daniel Hwang 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match while Josh Brickman defeated Chris Webb, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match.
Carmel 3, Loyola 2: Carmel ruled doubles play to get the team win.
The Corsairs won all three doubles matches that counted.
The No. 1 doubles team of Chris Butler and Andrew Buchholz led the way with a 3-set victory.
Woodstock d. Mundelein: Mundelein swept the two singles matches but lost all three doubles matches en route to a 3-2 defeat.
In the No. 1 singles match Tyler Patner swept Woodstock's Ryan Ortmann, 6-0, 6-1.
In the No. 2 singles match, Ben Nelson of Mundelein also got a sweep -- 6-3, 7-5 over Steven Rausch.
Badminton
Stevenson d. Deerfield: Stevenson improved to 11-2 with an 8-7 victory.
The Patriots' top singles player to win was Alexis Karigan, who was in the No. 3 slot.
Meanwhile, the No. 2 doubles team of Katie Lange and Ashley Gorson was the top doubles team to win for Stevenson.
Girls water polo
Fremd 12, Mundelein 9: Alice Denny had 4 goals for Mundelein.
College baseball
CLC, Elgin split: In the first game of a double header, CLC got a 2-1 victory thanks to 2 hits from Frank Fracek.
Pitcher Adam Ketzner went seven innings and gave up only 2 walks while striking out 4 batters.
In the second game, CLC got 2 hits from Jake Cobb.
