JCA sweeps Carmel; LZ's DeBernardis jacks 8th HR
The Carmel Catholic baseball team's perfect season came to an end Saturday.
The Corsairs suffered their first two losses of the season, as Joliet Catholic Academy swept the East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader by the scores of 8-5 and 6-5.
Carmel is now 9-2.
In the first game, which was tied 5-5 through five innings, Carmel got a home run from Bobby Lyne and 2 doubles from Donald Stopka.
Stopka, Lyne and Brian Siedlecki all finished with 2 hits.
In the finale, Carmel broke up a 4-4 tie by scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning. But then Joliet Catholic scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh to squeeze out the win.
Stopka again had a double and Siedlecki again finished with 2 hits for the Corsairs.
LZ, Mundelein split: Visiting Mundelein got off to a good start against Lake Zurich but was unable to finish the job.
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Mustangs squeezed out a 2-1 victory. But Lake Zurich left no doubt that redemption was the goal in the second game.
In the finale, the Bears ripped Mundelein, 14-0.
"Our kids showed great determination in winning the nightcap," Lake Zurich coach Gary Simon said. "We put all three phases of the game together against a quality Mundelein team."
In the first game, Mundelein pitcher Eric Rohe went the distance and rolled up 7 strikeouts while giving up just 1 hit.
Meanwhile, Jack Walliser went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs (14-2).
Lake Zurich (10-4) got an equally solid performance on the mound from Joey DeBernardis. He also had 7 strikeouts, but the only offense was his solo home run shot in the third inning.
On the game, Lake Zurich stranded eight runners.
In the finale, which lasted only five innings, offense wasn't a problem for Lake Zurich, which tallied 13 hits to just 2 for Mundelein.
DeBernardis hit yet another home run -- his eighth of the season -- and the Bears also got doubles from Steve Cleary and Reid Bergstrom.
On the mound, Brock Simon went the distance for Lake Zurich. He rolled up 7 strikeouts and allowed just 1 walk.
"Brock had great command of his pitches," Simon said.
Stevenson, Libertyville split: Stevenson and Libertyville each celebrated a win in the doubleheader.
The host Patriots opened with a 4-0 victory followed by a 9-4 Libertyville win in the finale.
Stevenson pitcher Scott Firth dominated the first game in upping his record to 3-1. He went the distance and rolled up 11 strikeouts. He also didn't walk a single batter.
The Patriots (9-5) got a double from Andrew Meister and a 2-for-3 performance at the plate from Jason Douglas.
In the second game, Libertyville was up 6-1 by the end of two innings.
The Wildcats stayed error-free and capitalized on 6 Stevenson errors.
VH sweeps North Chicago: Vernon Hills pitchers John Rathod and PJ Marsek each got their first victories of the season -- 10-0 and 14-4, respectively.
Grant, Lakes split: Grant capitalized on 5 Lakes errors to get a 5-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, while Lakes prevailed in the finale, 8-7.
In the second game, the Eagles (7-6) staged a late rally, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Randy Ratajczyk had a big hit, driving in 2 runs with one out to cut the Eagles' deficit to 7-6. Kevin Kelly then drove in 2 runs with a grounder that stayed in the infield but became trouble when a throw to first bounced past the first baseman.
Johnsburg 11, Grayslake C. 1: Thanks to 4 home runs, Johnsburg ran away from the Rams in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division opener for both teams.
The loss also snapped Grayslake Central's four-game winning streak. The Rams are now 10-4 overall.
"They simply outplayed us today," said Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen, whose team gave up 12 hits and mustered just 3 of its own. "We had no answer for them at the plate."
Huntley 9, Grayslake N. 1: The Knights gave up 12 hits to Huntley while managing only 2 of their own.
Nick Harrington led Grayslake North (4-5) with a double and a stolen base.
Softball
Libertyville, Stevenson split: There was a shutout and a nail-biter in this doubleheader.
Stevenson stormed out to a 5-0 victory in the opener, thanks to a strong pitching performance from Jordan Willis, who rolled up 8 strikeouts while allowing 4 hits.
The Patriots also got 2 hits from Rebekah Ozga, a triple from Annelise Docel and a double from Courtney Belcastro.
In the finale, Libertyville relief pitcher Danielle Kaczmar retired three straight Stevenson batters in the final inning to help preserve a 5-4 victory.
Starter Kat Bernard got the victory.
The Wildcats got a 2-for-4 performance at the plate from Danielle Kaczmar. She also tallied 2 RBI.
Meanwhile, teammate Toni Kintzel drove in a run with a triple.
For Stevenson, which rolled up 12 hits, Traci Africk, Belcastro, Amanda Jaegers and Erica Castriano each had 2 hits.
Carmel wins big: Carmel swept its doubleheader against St. Joseph in convincing fashion, 12-2 and 22-0.
In the first game, both Caitlin Hendricks and Katie Cornell got 2 hits while Courtney Ryan got the win on the mound.
In the second game, the Corsairs (5-4) were firmly in control with an 11-0 lead through four innings and added to that cushion with an 11-run fifth inning.
Carmel rolled up 12 hits, including 3 from Hendricks (2 doubles) and Kelly Gerli (1 home run).
Cornell had 2 hits, including a double, while Ryan got another win on the mound.
Antioch, Wauconda split: Wauconda started strong and Antioch finished strong.
The Bulldogs got a 4-3 win in the opener and Antioch rolled 11-1 in the finale.
In the first game, Ashley Mysliewic tallied 2 hits for Antioch, included a double.
In the second game, Mysliewic got the win on the mound while the Sequoits (8-4) got 3 hits from Lindsay Callanan and 2 hits from both Anne Bruce and Mysliwiec.
Warren gets sweep: Warren rolled to an 8-5, 7-0 sweep of Zion-Benton to move to 11-6 on the season.
In the first game, Warren jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first inning.
On the day, Jenna Anderson led the way with 3 total hits, including a double.
Teammates Stephanie Youngman and Nicole Bohn each had 2 hits, including 1 double apiece.
Pitcher Jessica Capko got the win with 3 strikeouts.
In the finale, Anderson, Megan Carlyon and Alex Booker each had 2 hits. Booker finished with 3 RBI while Anderson and Carlyon each had 2 RBI.
Pitcher Sam Berrios rolled up 5 strikeouts for the Blue Devils.
Girls soccer
Carmel 3, Marist 0: Sara Petermann scored 2 goals and assisted on the other as the Corsairs came out with the victory.
Wauconda 1, Prospect 0: With only five minutes left to play, Kaitlyn Llewellyn scored off an assist by Jess Hellweg to lift Wauconda (8-1-2).
Becky Breakfield was in goal for the Bulldogs.
Glenbrook North Invite: Warren went 1-1 on the day with a 2-1 victory over Walter Payton Prep and a 2-1 loss to Glenbrook North in penalty kicks.
In the first game, Natalia Jovanovic scored a goal off an assist by Maddie Wilson and assisted on the other.
Kelsey Taylor scored the other goal.
Goalie Erin Kilroy had 4 saves.
In the second game, Meghan Kilroy scored the only goal for the Blue Devils, who dropped to 3-8-1.
Erin Kilroy had 7 saves.
Lakes wins twice: At Crystal Lake Central, the Eagles defeated Larkin 3-1 thanks to a goal and an assist from Ashley Chernich.
Alex Neal had 3 assists in Lakes' 3-2 win over the host Central Tigers.
The Eagles improved to 5-6.
Boys volleyball
Mundelein takes 6th place: Mundelein went 2-3 at the Lake Forest Invite for a sixth place finish.
The Mustangs defeated Antioch (25-18, 27-26) and Notre Dame (25-16, 25-14) but lost to Barrington (15-25, 21-25), Deerfield (13-25, 24-26 and Loyola (22-25, 21-25).
Overall, the Mustangs got three solid hitting performances out of John McElligott (25 kills), Nick Faghihi (24 kills) and Mitchell Baumgartner (23 kills).
Faghihi also had a team-high 11 blocks while Baumgartner and Tyler Emdo led the way with 32 digs each.
Setter Tim Tokarz finished with 79 assists.
Mundelein is now 8-13 on the season.
Boys track
Lake Forest Invitational: Carmel placed fifth out of eight teams thanks in part to Cameron Reiger, who earned the team's only first-place finish.
Reiger won the 3,200-meter run in 9:28.9.
Highland Park Invite: On Friday night, Lakes broke 5 school records.
The team of Andres Calle, Greg Prendergast, Andrew Stein and Jon DeGrave set a record in the 400-meter relay.
Stein won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump, breaking both of his own records in the process.
Marcell Kirkmanbey shattered his previous school record in the 110 high hurdles by almost a second with a time of 14.1 seconds.
DeGrave also won the 300 IM with a time of 39.3.
Girls lacrosse
Windy City Classic: Lake Zurich went 1-2 on the day, beating Westside of Wisconsin, 10-5.
Mary Handrahan had 8 goals while Sarah Hernandez had 3 assists.
