Prospect 11, Buffalo Grove 10

Prospect junior right-hander Steve Latos picked the perfect time for the only perfect inning in Friday's Mid-Suburban East baseball showdown at Buffalo Grove.

Latos capped 2¿ innings of hitless relief with a perfect seventh as the two-time defending East champion Knights (7-5, 5-0) held on for a wild 11-10 victory.

"I was pumped up a little bit and I didn't want anyone else to get across," Latos said of getting the lead to hold on sophomore John Coen's RBI single in the sixth. "Usually we don't play well here and last year was in the back of our minds."

BG (5-4, 2-3) won 6-5 at home last year and 7-4 in the sectional semifinal en route to the Class AA Elite Eight.

But Prospect overcame deficits of 4-0 and 8-6 in a nearly three-hour tour with a combined 18 walks, 3 hit batters and 5 errors.

"As a coach it's disappointing to see, but at the same time both teams are doing it," said Prospect coach Ross Giusti. "It was an ugly game but you've got to battle through it and find a way to get it done."

One of the day's best strikes was thrown from more than 200 feet away in the seventh. BG right fielder John Bakun nailed Andrew Cardona trying to score on Kevin Krohm's two-out single to add an insurance run.

Latos (3-0) didn't need it as he sandwiched a pair of groundouts to shortstop Jason Leblebijian around a nice catch by third baseman Tim Scanlan of a foul pop along the side fence. That left dangerous Zach Borenstein (2-for-3) in the on-deck circle.

"He killed that one earlier in the game," Latos said of Borenstein barely hooking a potential fourth-inning grand slam foul. "I wanted to throw strikes and my changeup was working well in the seventh."

Latos came in with the bases loaded in the fifth and BG tied it on a walk and a Chris Delaney sacrifice fly.

But Matt Smith reached on an error to start the sixth and was sacrificed to second by Miles Osei. The lefty-hitting Coen (3-for-5) lined a 2-1 pitch to center to put Prospect ahead to stay.

"I hit the ball to left field when I'm at my best," Coen said. "But I got a pitch that was left up a little bit and we had a good sacrifice bunt I had to pick up. I like that (situation)."

Osei also had an RBI single, Cardona had a 2-run single and Shane Uhle had an RBI single for Prospect.

And BG lamented how close it was to being 5-0 in the East with its third 1-run loss of the week. Half of its 8 hits came in the first where Mike Ricciardi's 2-run double was followed by James Hurley's 2-run homer.

"You can't win like that," BG coach John Wendell said of his team's 12 walks and 3 errors. "You can't put that many people on base and have all the errors we had. In this league you can't give people things."

Schaumburg 6, Conant 5: Clutch relief pitching from Kyle Pusateri and Andy Brandt led Schaumburg (8-2, 4-1) to the MSL West comeback victory.

Conant took a 5-3 lead in the third but Pusateri, who got the relief loss Thursday, pitched 4 scoreless innings. Brandt got the final two outs for the save.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth, Schaumburg's Matt Mistrata drove in 2 runs with a single to right-center and another run scored on a throwing error. Dominick D'Agata went 2-for-3 with a double.

Mark Chereso had 2 doubles for Conant (4-5, 2-3).

Meadows 11, Hersey 10: Junior Ben Kamperschroer followed his first varsity hit -- a second-inning single -- with a 3-run homer to cap a 6-run fourth as Rolling Meadows (5-4, 3-2) held on for the MSL East win.

Hersey (6-7, 1-4) broke a 4-4 tie with 3 runs in the top of the fourth.

Singles by Kyle Gaedele (2-for-3) and Ben Sabal (3-for-5) set up RBI singles by Garrett Cannizzo and Scott Hempel for Meadows. An error set up Kamperschroer's blast.

Jon Carlson went 3-for-5 and also got the win with 3 relief innings and then the save. Carlson came out to start the seventh and Hersey got within a run on Matt Frenzer's 3-run homer.

Carlson came back in and gave up a two-out single to Bobby Gehm, who was 4-for-5 with a homer, but ended it with a strikeout.

Palatine 17, Fremd 8: Palatine (3-12, 2-3) erupted for 19 hits and roared to a 15-7 lead after four innings in the MSL West win over Fremd (5-3, 2-2), which held Schaumburg to 3 runs and 3 hits Thursday.

Andy Prombo homered and had 3 hits for the Pirates with Brian Mnichowicz, Cody Bobbit and Brett Chidester. Mark Sloma, Jeff Emerich and Myles Sylverne had 2 hits.

Ryan Shober had 2 homers and 5 RBI and Nick Addison was 3-for-4 for Fremd.

Barrington 11, Hoffman 0: Tom Unak (3-2) didn't need much support as he threw a 6-hitter with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk and host Barrington (7-6, 3-2) won its third straight MSL West game in 5 innings.

But the Broncos broke out with a 9-run first for Unak. David Ehlers was 3-for-3 for Hoffman (3-5, 1-3).

Elk Grove 6, Wheeling 1: Donny Duschinsky and Josh Daniels combined on a 4-hitter for Elk Grove (6-8, 2-3) in the MSL East win.

Duschinsky allowed only 1 hit with 6 strikeouts and 5 walks in 4½ innings. He also had an RBI double and Kevin Miller had an RBI single in the first for the Grens.

Chris D'Angelo was 2-for-3 with an RBI double for Elk Grove. Tom Zidron went 2-for-3 for Wheeling (2-5, 2-3).

Leyden 11, Addison Trail 1: Tim Mackey went 4-for-5 with a 3-run homer, double and 5 RBI and Josh Serrano was 2-for-3 as Leyden (8-2, 4-1) rolled to the West Suburban Gold win in 5 innings. Sam Cochiaro threw a 3-hitter with 4 strikeouts.
