Wrap: Viverito's 'D' sparks Devils
Vince Viverito showed off his arm Wednesday.
And he didn't throw a single pitch.
Warren's center fielder threw out base runners at home plate to end the fourth and sixth innings, sparking the Blue Devils to a 3-1 win over host Vernon Hills in a North Suburban Conference baseball crossover.
Cougars starting pitcher Brad Schnitzer suffered the loss, despite allowing only 1 hit in 6 innings. He walked five, allowing 3 runs (2 earned).
Offensively, Schnitzer was 2-for-3 to pace Vernon Hills' 6-hit attack.
Stevenson 6, Zion-Benton 2: Matt Goll homered and Brad Sorkin pitched a complete game for the host Patriots in the North Suburban Lake Division contest.
Pat Colbourn was 2-for-3 with 2 stolen bases for Stevenson (7-4). Sorkin (1-1) allowed 5 hits, struck out eight and walked a pair.
Antioch 8, Grant 3: Gage Ecklund hit 2 home runs, giving him three in two days, and knocked in three runs, as the visiting Sequoits won in North Suburban Prairie play for the second straight day.
Andy Danna was 4-for-4 with 2 doubles for Antioch (2-5, 2-0). Logan Kent went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Jeff Baird was 2-for-4 with a homer and double.
Baird also went the distance on the mound, striking out four and walking five.
D-C 13, Grayslake North 11: The two Fox Valley Conference teams had 16 hits apiece.
Grant Henricksen was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI for Grayslake North (3-4), which got home runs from Ryan Gutierrez and Vinnie Licciardello.
The Knights received 2 hits apiece from Jordan Field, Clay Henricksen (double), Gutierrez (4 RBI) and Licciardello.
Grayslake C. 18, McHenry 7: The Rams pounded out 15 hits and overcame a 6-0 deficit after the first inning.
Hitting stars for Grayslake Central (9-3) included Jordaan Williams (2 doubles, single), Kurt Schmidt (triple, double), Nick Tielke (double, 2 singles) and Josh DeAngelis (2 singles). Matt Schmidt, Alex Rosenkrantz and Kevin DeRue also had doubles.
Sophomore Mitch Tielke picked up his second varsity win, tossing 5½ innings and allowing just 2 earned runs.
"Anytime you can come back from a 6-0 deficit after one inning, you have to be pleased," Rams coach Troy Whalen said. "Mitch did a nice job with his composure, and after the first inning our defense made some nice plays behind him."
Lakes 18, Marengo 6: The Eagles had 20 hits for the second day in a row.
They were led by Andrew Highland, who went 5-for-5 with 3 RBI, and Kevin Kelly, who was 3-for-3 with 3 stolen bases.
Brian Baiocchi picked up his first win, going 4 innings, striking out three.
Lakes (5-5) had to fight back after giving up 3 runs in the first inning. The Eagles responded by scoring 12 runs in the top of the second. The big blow in the inning was a 2-run homer by Trey Williams.
Mundelein 2, Wauconda 1: The Mustangs scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
That's when Kevin Barber stole second base, raced to third when the throw went into the outfield, and scored on another errant throw on the play.
Dillon Smith and Jack Walliser had doubles for Mundelein (11-1). Winning pitcher Ian McDermott threw a complete game with 7 strikeouts. He allowed 3 hits and 3 walks.
Softball
Vernon Hills 2, Libertyville 0: Jackie Allen fired a 3-hit shutout to lead the host Cougars to the North Suburban Conference crossover win.
Allen struck out five and walked one in out-dueling Libertyville's Jenna Mosconi (5 strikeouts, 4 hits).
Erin Christensen had a double and an RBI, and Anastasia Guletsky lifted a sacrifice fly for Vernon Hills (9-3).
Libertyville fell to 8-3.
Wauconda 2, Mundelein 1: Katie Born's pinch hit drove in Sam Palucska with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Bulldogs in the North Suburban crossover.
Palucska, Amanda Pausa and Cara Nance were all 2-for-3 for Wauconda (6-5), which won for the third straight day.
Sara Super earned the win in relief of starter Kayla Stos, who pitched effectively.
Stevenson 11, Grayslake C. 1: Rebekah Ozga homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Patriots in the nonconference game.
Jamie Finkle doubled twice for Stevenson (7-5), and Tovah Schwartz also had 2 hits, including a double. Erica Castriano and Claire Kirchner also doubled for Stevenson, and Annelise Docel had a triple.
Genny Duffy was the winning pitcher.
Grayslake Central got a home run from Monika Wedick and a double from Abbie Goetsch. Wedick suffered the loss but had 13 strikeouts.
Warren 5, Grant 0: Jenna Anderson homered and Jessica Capko pitched 5 no-hit innings with 7 strikeouts and no walks in the North Suburban crossover.
Kayla Hurd pitched the final two innings for Warren (7-6). Megan Carlyon was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Lakes 2, Grayslake North 0: The Eagles received 2 hits apiece from Nora Kenney, Nicole Speck and Hannah Karstedt.
Shannon Cooley collected the win for Lakes (5-5).
Losing pitcher Sam Myers struck out nine. Sam Fletcher doubled for Grayslake North (4-4).
Antioch 2, Lake Zurich 0: In a game that was recently suspended in the bottom of the 10th at Lake Zurich, the visiting Sequoits prevailed in 18 innings.
In the top of the 18th, Kaley Lindstrom doubled for Antioch (5-3). Anne Bruce then lined an RBI single. A Lake Zurich error gave the Sequoits another run.
Ashley Mysliwiec earned the win in the circle.
Girls track
Carmel loses: The Corsairs received individual wins from Shannon Howell (100 high hurdles), Hilary Halford (800) and Stephanie Richartz (high jump, pole vault).
Carmel also won the 1,600 relay with Marybeth Berg, Richartz, Howell and Halford. The Corsairs captured the 400 relay with Evelyn Fisher, Megan Dennis, Megan Fowler and Howell.
Benet totaled 102 points to defeat Carmel (45), Joliet Catholic (33.5) and St. Joseph (4).
Boys volleyball
Vernon Hills d. Lakes: Herman Lynn had 6 kills and 7 blocks in the Cougars' 25-10, 25-10 North Suburban Conference win.
Ethan Steinhaus served 3 aces for Vernon Hills (12-5, 4-0).
Mundelein d. Antioch: John McElligott slammed 11 kills and Nick Faghihi added nine for the Mustangs, who won the North Suburban match 25-23, 22-25, 25-18.
Tim Tokarz dished 32 assists for Mundelein (6-10, 1-3).
Warren d. Zion-Benton: The Blue Devils improved to 21-2 overall and 4-0 in the North Suburban with a 25-10, 20-25, 25-11 win.
Derrick Norris and Ryan Schuette had 9 and 8 kills, respectively, for Warren. Jeff Halvorsen had 17 assists.
Girls soccer
Libertyville 1, Lake Zurich 0: Felicia Gonzalez scored off a Jen DiVencenzo corner kick in the second half to lift the visiting Wildcats in the North Suburban Lake Division showdown.
Erin Waehner earned the shutout for Libertyville (6-2-1, 1-1).
Lake Forest 2, Mundelein 1: Courtney Bestler had the only goal for the Mustangs (7-1-1), who suffered their first loss.
Lake Forest improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in the North Suburban Lake.
Stevenson 7, Warren 1: Ali Hall had 3 goals for the Patriots in North Suburban Lake action.
Michelle O'Brien added a pair of goals, and Kelley Moran and Allison Kluvers also scored for Stevenson (4-2, 1-0). Missy Halinski had 2 assists.
