Dist. 87 to honor outstanding staff

Glenbard High School District 87 will present its first Distinguished Service Awards at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn.

The awards recognize the following people whose work goes above and beyond the call of duty to help all students succeed.

Certified staff: Haresh Harpalani, Marti Seaton, Steve Penland, Christine Schwarz, Tracy Kline, Joanne May, Kathy Holmberg and Stephanie Wallace; Non-certified staff: Lynne Doles, Pat Potter and Patricia Remis; Administrator: Jim Cuny; Andy Frain (security) Frank Novak; Service Employee International Union: Dave Urlaub; Sodexho (food service): Cindy Sanchez.

Everyone who works in Glenbard District 87 was invited to nominate someone to be honored. Three letters of support were required for each nomination. A reading committee that represented all work groups selected the winners.

School's bands help out veterans

The Wheaton Warrenville South High School bands recently presented a check for $2,280 to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. The funds were raised by the band's Star-Spangled Holiday Pops Concert in December. The shelter is a transitional living facility for U.S. veterans.

Bookplate design winners announced

Samanth Joseph of Wheaton took top honors in the Senior Bookplate Design Contest at St. Francis High School in Wheaton.

Her entry was selected as the best representation for the high school's theme of Building our Future.

Second- and third-place recognition went to Patrick Vokaty of Woodridge and Daniella Pena of Naperville.

Sign up now for safety class

Champion Youth Outreach, a nonprofit organization, will present a safety awareness and self defense class Wednesdays, April 9 to June 4, at Gary School, 130 E. Forest Ave., West Chicago.

New students can register at 6:45 p.m. for class from 7 to 7:40 p.m. Returning students can register at 7:30 p.m. for class from 7:45 to 8:25 p.m.
