The village plans to use the site for a new fire station. District 21 board President Bill Harrison said he talked to the fire chief and Interim Wheeling Village Board President Pat Horcher earlier in the week about working together on the project and has received positive feedback from them.
Citizen on St. Pat's Day
When Deirdre Carroll of Arlington Heights came to this country from Ireland 25 years ago at age 23, she didn't think she'd stay. But all this time, and two kids later, she decided she should become a citizen since she'd spent more than half her life here. After a year of work, she's ready to be naturalized at 8 a.m. today at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago -- coincidentally enough on St. Patrick's Day. "This is home now," said Carroll, who works at the Wellness Center at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Solicitors' license pulled
A group soliciting money on the streets in Buffalo Grove had its permit revoked after reports from residents that the solicitors were being too aggressive. Buffalo Grove Police Cmdr. Steve Husak said the group from Outreach Ministry was knocking on windows and impeding the flow of traffic at Lake-Cook and Buffalo Grove roads, Arlington Heights and Lake-Cook roads, McHenry and Lake-Cook roads, Dundee and Buffalo Grove roads and McHenry and Arlington Heights roads. Village hall reportedly received four complaints last week about the group. The permit was revoked for the rest of the day Thursday, and Outreach Ministry cannot apply for another one for 90 days.

Computer-Aided Design students Derek Austerlade, Joseph Ingolia, Wayne Kuhn, Michael Snively and David Swoch could save the city more than $20,000 with their design for the proposed station on Algonquin Road. They designed the station as a school project.
