Briefs: Free class about siblings
Residents in Lombard Elementary District 44 with children 6 years old and younger can take a free class: "Getting Along With Siblings, Friends and Parents." The class runs from 6: 30 to 7:45 p.m. March 12 at Hammerschmidt Elementary School, 617 Hammerschmidt Ave., Lombard. During the class, psychologist Deanna Weiss will help parents and grandparents of children between the ages of 2½ and 6 learn strategies to help children get along with siblings, friends and adults. W. Chicago woman critical
A 25-year-old West Chicago woman remains in critical condition in Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin after a collision at 10:22 p.m. Saturday between a deer and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The accident occurred at 7N325 Route 31 between South Elgin and St. Charles. The injured woman, Adela Gomez of 829 Elizabeth St., was a front-seat passenger. Three other passengers in the vehicle were treated and released.
Drug arrest on traffic stop
A stop for a minor traffic offense early Monday morning in West Dundee led to a drug arrest. Jason Callahan, 26, of 678 Circle Drive, Roselle, was charged with possession of a controlled substance after police said they found two plastic bags containing 5 grams of cocaine in his right shoe, police said. In addition, Callahan was cited for driving on a suspended license, illegal transportation of alcohol and operation of a vehicle with suspended registration, police said. Callahan posted a $500 bond Monday morning at the Elgin lockup and was released from custody. His court date is March 18.
Parade leader nominations
Glen Ellyn's Fourth of July Committee is seeking parade marshal nominations for this year's parade. The panel is asking residents to nominate an individual, group or organization worthy of recognition to lead the Fourth of July parade. Addison schools honored
Three schools in Addison Elementary District 4 earned a Spotlight School Award from the Illinois State Board of Education. The board recognized Army Trail, Lake Park and Lincoln elementary schools as high poverty schools that achieve high academic performance. The schools defy the notion that test scores will reflect demographics, despite local efforts. This year, there were 508 Spotlight Schools around the country that earned the honor. In order to be recognized, a school must have: an enrollment of at least 50 percent low-income students; at least 60 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in both reading and math on standardized tests; at least 50 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in both reading and math in 2005 and 2006; made annual yearly progress under the No Child Left Behind mandate in 2006 and 2007.
Addison traffic crackdown
Addison police will crack down on drivers who speed or pass illegally on Route 53 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. The Addison Police Department's special traffic enforcement will target drivers on Route 53, between Lake Street and Army Trail Road, who use the shoulder to pass illegally. Officers also will be looking for speeders on Route 53 between North Avenue and Army Trail. Police said several crashes have occurred along Route 53 in Addison due to drivers breaking speeding and passing laws. For details, call Sgt. Roger Saran at (630) 543-3080.
Crash victim still critical
Adam Carr, a 27-year-old Bartlett man injured in a crash that shut down the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Friday, remained in critical condition late Monday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Carr was traveling east on the expressway when his car struck something and spun out of control at about 4 p.m. near Roselle Road. Carr had to be extricated and was flown to the hospital by helicopter.
Citizens Police Academy
Applications are being accepted for the Addison Police Department's Citizen Police Academy, which runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays March 13 to May 22. The free program will provide an overview of various areas of law enforcement, including presentations by police officers, facility tours and the use of police equipment. Graduates of the academy may continue on to the Alumni Citizen Police Academy (Citizens On Patrol) and partner with the police to help identify problems and possible solutions on issues that effect the quality of life of residents.
