COD remembrance for NIU
College of DuPage will hold a Day of Remembrance for Northern Illinois University at noon today. The ceremony is planned for Room 1544 of the Student Resource Center. College President Sunil Chand will speak and there will be a brief service by the flagpole in the Rainbow Dancer Plaza on the south side of the building. Don't be alarmed
The Army ROTC program from Wheaton College will conduct training between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Community Park near Geneva Road and President Street. Realistic-looking weapons will be used as training aids. For details, call (630) 752-5455.
ComEd recognized
ComEd and natural landscaping contractor Pizzo & Associates recently received an award from the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association for the restoration of prairie and wetland in West Chicago. The roughly 2-acre restored area is located near the Ball Horticultural Co. at 622 Town Road. Since 1994, ComEd has restored more than 300 acres of prairie habitats in its service territory.
Kidz Kabaret receives grant
The children's theater group Kidz Kabaret has been awarded an $1,900 Arts, Education & Community Service Grant from the Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise. The grant will fund the development of an assistant director internship program that will allow carefully selected student interns from local middle schools and high schools to learn all aspects of show production. The interns will work with Kidz Kabaret Artistic Director Kandiss Hernandez and mentor younger students. About 15 interns will be selected based on essays and experience. BP school grants available
Area teachers are invited to apply for BP grants of up to $10,000. The A + for Energy program is available to any preschool through high school classroom teacher in an accredited or licensed public or private school within Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties. Winners are recognized for developing creative and student-focused classrooms, after-school, extracurricular or summer programs. While these programs must be centered on energy or energy conservation, they can move beyond science to incorporate reading, math, history, geography and the arts. Interested teachers can find out more about the program by visiting www.aplusforenergy.org. Applications must be postmarked or submitted online by March 7.
Citizens Police Academy:
Applications are being accepted for the Addison Police Department's Citizen Police Academy, which runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays March 13 to May 22. The program, which is free, will provide an overview of various areas of law enforcement, including presentations by police officers, facility tours and the use of police equipment. Graduates of the academy may continue on to the Alumni Citizen Police Academy, or Citizens On Patrol, and partner with the police to help identify problems and possible solutions on issues that affect the quality of life for the residents.
