All right: Time for the all- teams
After watching Stevenson's Dylan Richter put together an all-state-like performance against Mundelein last Friday night (34 points, 22 rebounds), and with the regular season over in girls basketball, I got the "all-" bug.
It's all good.
(Note: Only players from the Daily Herald's Lake County coverage area are eligible for these unofficial awards).
The official Daily Herald all-area boys and girls basketball teams will run in Sports Extra on March 7.
• All-Senior Team (Girls): Warren C Sarah Boothe, Mundelein G Samantha Panitch, Lake Zurich G Peggie Parhas, Warren F Lory Shaw, Grant F Jamie Swanson
Comment: Swanson won't make any all-state teams and won't play Division I basketball, but she's had a spectacular season, maybe better than any girl in Lake County whose name isn't Sarah Boothe.
• All-Senior Team (Boys): Lakes F Kevin Guirand, Round Lake G/F Vernon Randolph, Stevenson F Dylan Richter, Mundelein F Navjot Singh, Stevenson G Kevin Stineman
Comment: Randolph played for Warren two years ago as a sophomore, then didn't play varsity again until just prior to Christmas, his senior year. Too bad. He can score with anybody and is a treat to watch.
• All-Junior Team (Girls): Lake Zurich F/G Lydia Bauer, Carmel G Tiffany Hendrickson, Wauconda F Lauren Mead, Round Lake G Labrenthia Murdock, Mundelein F J.J. Sawchuk
Comment: Great junior group in the county. This team could easily (and maybe should) include Libertyville C Casey Hopper, Mundelein G Kelsey O'Connor, Lake Zurich G Olivia Allen, Round Lake F Amber Phillips, Warren G Joree Green and Grayslake Central G Katelynn Putkonen
• All-Junior Team (Boys): Wauconda G Connor Dimick, Lake Zurich F Brandon Kunz, Libertyville C Jeremy Letchford, Lake Zurich G Connor Mooney, Warren G Brandon Paul.
Comment: Anyone who wants to substitute Grayslake Central G Mike Brumm, that's fine with me. Call me crazy, but when he elevates on his jump shot and kicks his leg wearing that No. 23 jersey, Paul looks, physically, like a young M.J.
• All-Sophomore Team (Girls): Lake Zurich F Audrey Bauer, Lake Zurich G Gabby Chapa, Grayslake North F Lauren Erickson, Mundelein F/G Toni Knar, Wauconda G Kate Martino
Comment: Mundelein G Brooke Evans, a hoops junkie and daughter of a coach, would be an easy selection, but her knee, then her other knee, have limited her playing time big-time.
• All-Sophomore Team (Boys): Vernon Hills F John Androus, Mundelein G Ben Brust, Stevenson G Jeff Levitt, Vernon Hills G/F Chris Morgan, Grayslake Central F Andrew Sipes
Comment: How scary good is this group? All of these guys not only can play, but they're basketball-savvy. Levitt held the high-scoring Brust to 5 points in an overtime game last Friday. How did Brust respond? He dropped 40 points on Morton two days later.
• All-Freshman Team (Girls): Mundelein F Olivia Dunigan, Wauconda G Tammy Ellis, Stevenson F Anna Morrissey, Antioch G Andi Potkonjak, Vernon Hills F Jessica Schwartz
Comment: We got a couple of future stars in this group.
• All-Freshman Team (Boys): Vernon Hills G DaVaris Daniels, Antioch F Keenan Johnson, Antioch F Kyle Melton, Grant G Vic Muntu
Comment: Tough for a freshman boy to play at this level, but there's definitely some talent in this group. Daniels also played varsity football.
• All-Defensive Team (Girls): Lake Zurich F/G Lydia Bauer, Warren C Sarah Boothe, Mundelein G Samantha Panitch, Round Lake G Jazzamin Rivers, Warren F Lory Shaw
Comment: When Boothe is off at Stanford next winter, after four varsity seasons, girls who play against Warren will finally be able to drive the lane and not fear having the ball swatted down their throat.
• All-Defensive Team (Boys): Grayslake Central G Mike Davis, Stevenson G Jeff Levitt, Stevenson F Dylan Richter, Vernon Hills C Kenny Rideout, Grant G Mike Shields
Comment: While Shields has had five games of 30 or more points, he also has a knack for swiping the ball. He had 10 steals in one game.
• All-Sharpshooter Team (Girls): Grayslake North G Natalie Barczyk, Carmel G Tiffany Hendrickson, Mundelein G Kelsey O'Connor, Lake Zurich G Peggie Parhas, Warren G Shana Shepherd
Comment: Shepherd has NBA-range on 3-pointers.
• All-Sharpshooter Team (Boys): Libertyville G Joey Aiello, Mundelein G Ben Brust, Lake Zurich G Connor Mooney, Warren G Brandon Paul, Lakes G Trey Williams.
Comment: With a name like Trey, Williams was born to be a 3-pointer shooter.
Here's how good a shooter and cool a customer Aiello is: He hits a free throw against Glenbrook North last Saturday. Then the game is stopped so a GBN player can be taken out to get his bloody finger treated. Aiello hangs out at the foul line, no emotion on his face. When the game resumes after the delay, Aiello steps up to stripe and matter-of-factly swishes the second free throw.
• All-Small Team (Girls): Mundelein G Ally Hanas (5-1), Wauconda G Kate Martino (5-3), Grayslake North G Ali Vlahos (5-3), Libertyville G Haley Walton (5-2), Libertyville G Hannah Walton (5-2)
Comment: Vlahos can really fill up the basket. I gotta ask the Walton identicals which one is taller. You just know one of them will say, "I got her by ¼ inch."
• All-Small Team (Boys): Mundelein G Kevin Blackowicz (5-9), Wauconda G Connor Dimick (5-9), Vernon Hills G Jeff Epner (5-8), Lake Zurich G Connor Mooney (5-9), Mundelein G Eric Pagsanjan (5-8)
Comment: Got to give special mention to Carmel G Doug Rogers. He, too, is listed at 5-9 -- and 130 pounds. I think teammate Jack Baucus (6-6, 225) could swallow him whole.
• All-Tall Team (Girls): Warren C Sarah Boothe (6-5), Grant F Autumn Gaylor (6-1), Wauconda F Lauren Mead (6-1), Warren F Lory Shaw (6-2), Grant C Bailey Wagner (6-1)
Comment: I recently saw a game where one team had a girl as tall as Boothe, only she was raw as a basketball player. It makes you appreciate how wonderfully skilled and polished Boothe is for a teenage girl of her height.
• All-Beef Team (Boys): Carmel C Jack Baucus (6-6, 225), Grant F Marc Grischeau (6-5, 220), Libertyville C Jeremy Letchford (6-6, 225), Mundelein F Matt Pioch (6-5, 265), Warren F James Poliquin (6-4, 240)
Comment: I'm guessing on Grischeau's weight, as it's not listed on Grant's roster. I just know the kid is a load and has played some pretty good basketball this winter.
• All-Rebounding Team (Girls): Lake Zurich F/G Lydia Bauer, Warren C Sarah Boothe, Antioch F Christine Gaborek, Warren F Lory Shaw, Grant C Bailey Wagner
Comment: Boothe is averaging a double-double (points-rebounds).
• All-Rebounding Team (Boys): Lakes F Kevin Guirand, Lake Zurich F Brandon Kunz, Stevenson F Dylan Richter, Vernon Hills C Kenny Rideout, Mundelein F Navjot Singh
Comment: The amazing thing about Richter's prowess on the boards is that he's just 6-3. He's a great leaper -- he dunks easily -- with great instincts.
• All-Name Team (Girls): Round Lake G Jazzamin Rivers, Lakes G Simone Hobbs, Lake Zurich G Peggie Parhas Warren G D'Anequa Taylor, Warren G Destinee Wells
Comment: I just like saying 'Peggie Parhas.' Anyone with an apostrophe in his or her first name (i.,e., Taylor) is almost a lock for this team.
• All-Name Team (Boys): Grayslake North G Noel DeLaMar, Wauconda F/G Gibson Gaite, Grayslake North G Xeryus Ivory, Grayslake Central F Jahr'y Johnson, Lakes F Marcell Kirkmanbey
Comment: Hey, Jahr'y.
• All-'O' Team (Girls): Stevenson F Michelle O'Brien, Mundelein G Kelsey O'Connor, Vernon Hills F Erin O'Donnell, Carmel G Maddie Ogrinc, Warren G Kim O'Leary
Comment: O'Connor brought her "O" in a game at Zion-Benton, scoring 37 points.
• All-Crayon Team (Girls): Wauconda F Kristin Brown, Warren G Joree Green, Round Lake F Amber Phillips, Libertyville G Kate White
Comment: I probably could put Round Lake G Jazzamin Rivers on this team. My dictionary defines jasmine as a light yellow.
• All-Crayon Team (Boys): Mundelein G Kevin Blackowicz, Round Lake F Jerome Brown, Round Lake G Eric Green, Grayslake North G Xeryus Ivory
Comment: Lake Forest (not in our coverage area) has a guard named E.J. Silver.
OK, all done.
