Cross country skiers invited to evening events
For some, winter has long overstayed its welcome, but for others it has been a great opportunity to get out and enjoy McHenry County Conservation District's Candlelight Cross Country Ski nights.
"So far this winter we've had five weekends of good ski weather that have attracted over 350 skiers out to enjoy the trails. That's more then we've been able to offer over the past three years combined," said Perry Weborg Land and Facilities Supervisor.
"We'll have anywhere from 20 to 75 skiers a night depending on the weather."
Candlelight skis are offered from 5 to 9 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, weather permitting, and rotate to different sites around the county.
After some brisk exercise, visitors can enjoy refreshments around the campfire.
Skiers must provide their own equipment. Skiers of every level and age are welcome.
On Friday and Saturday, the ski will be held at Rush Creek, 20501 McGuire Road in Harvard, 12 miles west of Route 47 off Route 14.
On Feb. 22 and 23, the ski will be held at The Hollows, 3804 Route 14 in Cary.
For an up-to-date report on ski conditions, call (815) 338-6223 or visit Web site www.mccdistrict.org the Thursday before.
"Rush Creek is perfect for beginners because the trail is relatively flat," Weborg said. "The 1-mile loop travels through oak woodland, creating a nice scenic backdrop. The more advanced skiers will circle a few times, take a break by the campfire and then head out again."
In addition to candlelight skis, the district offers more than 40 miles of cross country ski trails at 14 sites throughout the county.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy 6 miles of groomed trails at Glacial Park in Ringwood; Hickory Grove in Cary is 1.5 miles; The Hollows in Cary is 2.75 miles; Marengo Ridge in Marengo is 4.5 miles; Prairieview Education Center in Crystal Lake is 4 miles; and Rush Creek in Harvard is 3 miles.
