Patriots hockey: The Stevenson Patriots beat the St. Viator Lions 7-2 Jan. 5 at West Meadows Arena in the Metro North Conference.
Several saves by goaltender Josh Schmaren early in the period kept the game tied until late in the period.
In the middle of the first period, Justin One tipped in a slap shot from the point from defenseman Justin Krupp. Fifteen seconds later, Myles Lobus scored the first of his two goals. St. Viator scored two goals in the second period, but they were matched when One got his second goal. Lobus scored his second goal on a play by Jake Gould. In the final period, Patriot Kollin Fairbanks scored on Krupp's assist for his second point of the night and Mark Leyderman and Marc Weiner also scored.
The Patriots played a practice game against the Mundelein Mustangs Jan. 6 at West Meadows Arena. The shots on goal were even and goalie Mitch Levinson kept the game even throughout the first period.
In the second period much of the game was played in Stevenson's defensive zone, but Kollin Fairbanks stole the puck inside his blue line, and skated into the Mundelein end beating the Mustangs' goalie with a backhand shot to give Stevenson the lead. Later in the period, defenseman Max Mora had a turnover in Stevenson's end, and the Mustangs' right wing scored.
Mundelein took the lead in the middle of the third period. Stevenson got a power play opportunity with a minute and a half to play and converted it into the game-tying goal when Myles Lobus and tipped the puck into the net. In the last minute of play Mundelein threatened to take the lead but Stevenson hung on for the 2-2 tie.
