Harper to host 'Year of Rat' fest
The Chinese New Year of 4706 will be ushered in at Harper College with a traditional lion dance, chopstick lessons, Chinese cooking demonstration, and China travelogue from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today in the student lounge at Harper College, Algonquin and Roselle roads, Palatine.
From 11 a. m. to 11:30 a.m., dancers wearing a lion costume will snake through the festivities. Chopstick lessons will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. From noon to 1 p.m. Ying Stoller will demonstrate how to make pot stickers and spring rolls. A China travelogue will be at 1:30 p.m.

Credit union offers scholarships
Premier Credit Union with locations in Schaumburg, Palatine, Northbrook and Highland Park is offering up to 12, $2,000 scholarships. Applications must be submitted by March 7 from www.mycu.org or picked up at any branch location. The Palatine branch is at 1212 W. Northwest Hwy. Summit at Oakton on education issues
Issues facing black Americans in higher education will be addressed in a summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 15, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road.
The conference, One Voice, One Village, One Goal, is designed to share information about the role and status of blacks employed at community colleges and discuss ways of retaining black faculty, staff, administrators, and students in the educational system.
Registration is $45 and includes summit materials, continental breakfast, and lunch.

The Northwest Special Recreation Association is looking for individuals 16 years and older who like to work with people with developmental and physical challenges in a recreational setting. Jobs include part-time program staff, program aides, drivers, lifeguards and water safety instructors. Hours are flexible, and pay is commensurate with experience and education.
