For All

Ice Skating in the Park: The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department urges you to bundle up, grab your ice skates and a thermos of hot chocolate and head to Sunset or Stoneybrook parks to enjoy the outdoor ice skating. Parks are open from sunrise to sunset. Green flags indicate that the ice is ready for skating (no hockey, please.)

For youth

American Red Cross Babysitters Training Class: Quality child care is hard to find. Youth, ages 11 to 16, can become babysitters by completing the American Red Cross Babysitters Training course offered through the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department on Saturday. You will learn how to select safe toys, change diapers and dress babies as well as learn individual emergency response skills, first aid fundamentals and tips on accident prevention.

Course fee includes a workbook and a take-home first aid kit. Participants should bring a sack lunch to class.

Resident fee is $45; nonresident fee is $55. Class held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Algonquin Village Hall, 2 S. Main St., Algonquin.

Dad and Me Painting Pottery: Kids, team up with dad to make a one-of-a-kind gift for mom. Join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department, along with instructors from Handmade on Main, as we paint and decorate a beautiful picture frame or a vase to give on Mother's Day.

All materials are included along with a gift tag to write down a special message to mom.

Class is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. Resident rate is $24; nonresident rate is $29. Class will be held at Handmade on Main, 320 S. Main St., Algonquin.

Daddy/Daughter Date Night: Hey, dads. Create a lasting memory by treating your daughter(s) to a night that will be forever cherished. Enjoy a delicious meal and dance the night away. We'll capture the evening with a picture, a craft and a manicure. All daughters will take home a treat bag, too. Registration deadline is Monday.

This event will be held at the Village Hall from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10. Resident rate is $35 ($20 for each additional daughter) and nonresident rate is $2 ($24 for each additional daughter).

Kid's Craft Corner: Enjoy special time with your child as we meet to share in making a Valentine craft. Join instructor Deena Ciavarella in the Lake in the Hills Village Hall lower-level classroom from noon to 12:45 p.m. Feb. 11. Skill enhancement may include scissors and glue use, painting, as well as creative and imaginative thinking. Dress for messy fun. Class sizes are limited, so register early. Adult participation is required. All ages are welcome. Resident fee is $10 for parent/child and $7 for each additional child; nonresident fee is $12 parent/child and $8 for each additional child.

Every Kid LOVES a Party: The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department invites you on Feb. 14 for a Valentine's Day party with a related easy-to-make craft, music and a story. Bring your imagination and be ready for some messy fun. Class size is limited. Kids of all ages are welcome; adult participation is required. Class is held in the Village Hall classroom from 1-1:45 p.m. Resident rate is $10 per parent/child and $7 for each additional child; nonresident rate is $12 per parent/child and $8 for each additional child.

Teen Ski/Snowboard trip: Hit the slopes with the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department on President's Day, Feb. 18, with a ski trip to Wilmont Mountain. With 25 open runs from beginner to expert, skiers of all levels will have plenty of hills from which to choose. For the snowboarders, there is a terrain park with rails and big jumps.

Participants, ages 11 to 18, can bring their own equipment or rent from the facility. If you bring your own snowboard, remember your helmet, as they are required.

Fee includes transportation, chaperones, lift ticket, lesson and rental. Bring your own snacks or money for the snack shop.

The bus leaves from the village hall at 9 a.m. and returns around 5 p.m. Resident fee is $45; nonresident fee is $55.

For adults

Adult Horseback Riding Lessons: The Lake in the Hills and Somerset Sporthorse now offer introductory horseback riding lessons. Lessons are 45 minutes long and located in a heated, indoor riding arena. Wear hard sole shoes or boots; helmets are provided. Lessons are from 10 to 10:45 a.m. beginning Feb. 7 at Somerset Sporthorse, 1109 Pyott Road, Lake in the Hills. Resident fee is $140; nonresident fee is $150.

Ladies Night Out: Join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department and nail specialists at the A.B.C. School of Nail Technology for an some pampering from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 15. Women, age 16 and older, can put on their comfy clothes and treat themselves to a Royal Spa Manicure, the Royal Spa Queen Package including a pedicure and chair massage, or a special Chocolate Manicure. Snacks and beverages will be served.

Resident rate is $18, nonresident rate is $22. A.B.C. School of Nails & Tech., is at 14 E. Miller Road, Lake in the Hills.
