Hockey

Patriots tournament wins: The Stevenson Patriots beat the Bartlett Hawks 11-1 in the first round of the New Trier Junior Varsity holiday hockey tournament.

The Patriots rushed to a 3-0 first period lead, extended it to 7-1 at the end of the second period, and added 4 more goals in the third period. Sophomore center Ricky Razdolsky's line scored all three first period goals. Tyler St. Martin got the first goal and Razdolsky himself got the next two. On Razdolsky's first goal, he passed the puck between the defenseman's legs back to himself before scoring. In the second period, Justin Krupp got a goal and Myles Lobus also scored on a rebound and on a backhand. In the third period, St. Martin scored again; Kollin Fairbanks had a goal, skating the full 200 feet of ice sheet and beating two men on the way; and defensemen Christian Wilhelm and Max Mora also scored to complete the 11-1 win.

The next day, Stevenson beat the Evanston Wildkits 2-1, led by goaltending by goalie Josh Schmaren. Evanston got the only goal in the first two periods. But Stevenson's blueliners and saves by Schmaren kept the game close. Then, with eight minutes to play, a rebound on a shot from the point came out to Kollin Fairbanks. Fairbanks held the puck and skated across the middle until Evanston's goalie committed then lifted the puck over the goalie's left shoulder to tie the game. With a minute and a half to play, Stevenson shot the puck into the Wildkits' zone. Their goalie came out to play the puck and backhanded it to his defenseman behind the net, but Tyler St. Martin stole the pass behind the net and scored on an empty goal for the game winner.

Stevenson played New Trier the following night in the decisive preliminary round game in the holiday tournament. After splitting two games earlier this year a tough game was anticipated. But Stevenson surprised the Trevians with a 9-2 victory to clinch a spot in the championship game. After one period Stevenson led 5-0. Kollin Fairbanks had two goals, and Justin One had an unassisted goal. The Patriots extended their lead to 8-0 in the second period. Two passing plays led to two of the goals, one by Justin Krupp and one by Tyler St. Martin. The victory sent Stevenson to the championship game to play Evanston for the third time in a week.
