Briefs: New eats for Wheeling

The Wheeling village board on Monday approved Cooper's Hawk, a restaurant that will be moving into the Westin hotel development. Besides an eatery, the location will also include a winery and outdoor seating. Construction on the restaurant is expected to start in about a month, and the village expects the restaurant, at 583 N. Milwaukee Ave., to be open by the summer. The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, although the village's liquor license is valid through 2 a.m. Besides the Wheeling location, Cooper's Hawk is also open in Orland Park and Burr Ridge.

Fire breaks out in Wheeling

Fire left a four-unit condominium building in Wheeling uninhabitable Monday, officials said. About 24 firefighters responded to the fire at 1200 Iota Court around 1:25 p.m. after what preliminary investigation showed started by a plumber who was sweating pipes in the building, fire officials said. The fire was under control in about 40 minutes and no one was injured, officials said.

Accident in Schaumburg

One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Schaumburg around 10 p.m. Monday, police officials said. Police were working at the scene of the crash near the intersection of Rodenburg Road and W. Wise Road late Monday. Police could not provide more information on the crash as of late evening.

Charges sought for teen

Streamwood police are seeking a juvenile charge of unlawful use of a weapon against a 15-year-old Streamwood High School student accused of displaying an unloaded pellet gun to classmates Friday morning. Police are sending paperwork to the juvenile division of the state's attorney's office where the final determination of charges will be made, Streamwood Deputy Police Chief Jim Gremo said. Elgin Area School District U-46 also has suspended the Streamwood resident from school. Most suspensions last 10 days, district officials said.

Train death called suicide

The death of a Schaumburg man struck by a train in Roselle Friday appeared to be a suicide, the DuPage County coroner's office said Monday. The 58-year-old man was killed about 3:30 p.m. by a westbound Metra train near Roselle Road.

No suspects in man's death

Chicago police Monday reported no leads in the slaying of a Des Plaines man in a convenience store. A police spokesman said there are no suspects in the death of 46-year-old Kaycee Fadiya. A gunman walked into the Edgewater Minimart, 1215 W. Devon Ave., shortly after 11 a.m. Friday, killing Fadiya. The Nigerian native opened the store near Loyola University. The suspect is described as 6 feet tall, wearing gray pants and a black leather jacket.

'Sicko' to prompt dialogue

Michael Moore's documentary film "Sicko" will be screened for free at 7 p.m. Feb. 8, at Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church in Palatine. A discussion will follow about the human cost of the present U.S. health care system and ask if there is a better way. This is sponsored by Countryside's Adult Faith Development Council.
