House fire causes $60,000 in damage

A fire that took a half-hour to put out caused $60,000 of damage to an Algonquin home Sunday morning, leaving it uninhabitable, authorities said.

Nobody was injured in the 9:39 a.m. blaze that occurred on the 1400 block of Cary Road and caused substantial smoke damage, said Capt. Joe Teson of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.

The fire, which originated in a rear bedroom, moved from there to the hallway and into the house's main living area, he said.

Algonquin police and the McHenry County Sheriff's Department closed Cary Road for two hours and diverted traffic to Klasen Road, Teson said.

This occurred while fire personnel from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Huntley and Cary fire protection districts secured the scene, put out the fire and launched an investigation into the fire's cause, Teson said.

A preliminary probe shows that an existing electrical problem in the house may have been the reason behind it, Teson said.

The three people who lived in the house, a mother and her two children, are now staying with relatives, Teson said.
