Glenbard North's wrestling team capped off a complete decade of DuPage Valley Conference tournament dominance and won the program's 20th title in the 32-year history of the conference on Saturday.
The Panthers outpointed West Aurora, 276-225, while Wheaton North was third with 198.5 points and Glenbard East placed fourth with 151.
"We knew it wouldn't be easy," said Panthers coach Mark Hahn. "We had to get a lot of team bonus points in the early rounds, and that's what we did."
"Two champs, two seconds, a bunch of thirds, two fourths," said Blackhawks coach Mike DiNovo. "Everybody won matches, and it was a full team effort. Credit to (Glenbard North) for winning it, but I'm happy with our guys."
Very few bonus points were earned on the title mat in West Aurora, as 11 matches were won by straight decisions.
The Panthers' Joe Gosinski won the crown at 103, and teammate Jamie Warczynski followed with a 13-8 decision at 112 pounds, avenging an earlier loss to Wheaton North's Adrian Laskero via 13-8 decision.
"I thought about that (loss) all week," Warczynski said. "I knew I had to be more offensive and watch out for his shots."
Falcons senior Nate Fitzenreider ended his DVC career with his third title, earning a hard-fought 5-2 decision over West Aurora's Tanner Andrews at 119.
"It feels good. He's a tough kid, and I knew it would be another close match," Fitzenreider said.
Panthers junior Tony Ramos won his third DVC title with a 10-3 decision over the Falcons' Jake Denhof at 125, and teammate Jimmy Chase returned from a knee injury and won his first conference title, at 130 pounds.
The Panthers' Geno Capezio earned a 2-1 edge in takedowns over the Falcons' Ryan Earley for a 6-5 win at 135 pounds, before a wild one occurred at 140.
The Panthers' Danny Monaco beat the Falcons' Eric Terrazas with a late takedown earlier this season, and Terrazas returned the favor Saturday with a late takedown at the edge in a 5-3 decision win.
"I tried to push the pace, and I was just finally able to get in on him," Terrazas said. "I wanted to be a conference champ, and to complete that goal feels great."
Vince Ramos won his third DVC title for the Panthers via 13-7 decision over Glenbard East's Jason Callahan at 145, and Naperville Central senior Jon Coluzzi won his first career title at 152.
"It feels good. I have a goal to make it downstate, and now we'll see if I can make it a reality," Coluzzi said.
The Panthers' Justin Wahrman won the title at 160, and the Redhawks' Chris Graeber took the crown at 171 pounds.
"My goal is to be a three-sport all-conference athlete," Wahrman said. "I did it in football, I did it in wrestling, and now I want to do it in baseball in the spring."
West Aurora's Mario Gonzalez won his second career DVC title with the night's only pin at 189 pounds, improving to 17-1 in the process.
"The only thing I need now is to be in good shape. I feel like everything else is there," Gonzalez said. "I'm pushing myself in practice, and the coaches are pushing me, too."
Glenbard East's Pat Walker stayed unbeaten on the year and won his third title at 215 pounds over the Tigers' Mike Olp.
"He's a tank," Walker said, after winning a 15-4 decision. "I just wore him down, I guess, and I was sticking to my shots, outside."
The night ended when West Aurora's Juan Perez escaped from the Panthers' Jeff Jones in the fourth overtime to win his second DVC heavyweight crown.
"The second half of (Perez's) year has been really good," DiNovo said. "He's just being more aggressive with what he does well."
Suburban Catholic:ŒForget stopping Montini.
The Broncos lost just one match as they cruised past the competition during Saturday's Suburban Catholic Conference Mega Duals wrestling meet. The Mega Duals -- which acts as a conference meet but has each of the teams square off in dual format instead of using a tournament -- was a Montini showcase.
The Broncos defeated host St. Edward 80-0, Marian Central 84-0, Aurora Central Catholic 78-0, Driscoll 77-0 and Marmion 64-3.
"We had a really good effort," Broncos coach Mike Bukovsky said. "We wanted to make sure we came out focused. Garrett kept rolling."
Heavyweight Garrett Goebel certainly did.
The senior, who has verbally committed to play football at Ohio State in the fall, went a perfect 5-0 on the day, securing pins against St. Edward's Shane Finnane, Marmion's Connor English and Marian Central's Cody O'Neill, each in 43 seconds or less. Goebel, the No. 1 heavyweight according to illinoismatmen.com, also picked up a pair of forfeits against Driscoll and Aurora Central Catholic. The senior's efforts allowed him to secure the conference MVP award.
"Coming in here our goal was to win the conference," Goebel said. "All of our guys stayed focused throughout the day. We had a lot of guys step up."
Montini finished with 23 pins on the day. The Broncos secured an all-conference member in each weight class.
The lone match the Broncos lost came when Marmion's Dane Deufel got a 5-3 decision over the Broncos' Mark Marten. Deufel, who was also selected to all-conference honors, locked up his second straight conference championship, going 5-0. This was the second year in a row Deufel went 5-0 in the conference.
"There were a few other close ones, but I did my own thing," Deufel said. "It's my senior year. That motivates you. It's kind of a reality check."
Marmion had defeated Driscoll (36-9), ACC (65-12), Marian Central (62-12) and St. Edward (54-12) going into the final match against Montini. The Cadets got some big wins from 145-pounder Andrew Konovodoff, who went 4-1.
Konovodoff got a 6-2 decision against St. Edwsard's Will Lytle, pinned Marian Central's Mike Pappas and Driscoll's Brett Warren and a forfeit against Driscoll before Montini's Alex Saunders pinned him in 1:02.
"We wrestled well all day," Cadets coach Dean Branstetter said. "(Deufel) wrestled a good, smart match. Andrew Konovodoff had a pretty good day. He wrestled a good smart match against St. Edward."
St. Edward's lone member of the all-conference squad was sophomore Dan Duffy. Duffy had a monster day, going 4-1 with 2 pins. The highlight came when the sophomore was able to avenge a 1-point loss to Marmion's Nick Knuston at the Geneva tournament earlier in the season. This time Duffy scored a 7-3 decision.
"It shows that I have improved over the season," Duffy said. "(The other matches) were good warm-ups and they got me ready for Marmion."
Duffy improved his record to 14-13 by pinning ACC's Kevin Isles and Marian Central's Dan Piggot before falling to Montini's Dan Stelter by technical fall. Duffy also picked up a forfeit against Driscoll.
"He had a great day," Shane Kottkamp said. "He's been kind of hot and cold all year. Today he wrestled well all day."
