Briefs: Injured officer at home
The Schaumburg police officer injured in a two-car collision in Hoffman Estates Wednesday was released from the hospital Friday and is back home. Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl did not know when the unidentified officer would return to duty but estimated it would be at least a couple of months given the nature of his head and chest injuries. The crash occurred Wednesday morning as the officer was waiting in his squad car to turn left onto northbound Roselle Road from Illinois Boulevard. His squad car, which was on routine patrol, was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by a 28-year-old Lake Zurich woman. She was treated and released the same day. Though the Schaumburg officer had a stop sign and the Lake Zurich woman didn't, Hoffman Estates police issued no tickets in the collision, saying that a school bus turning right from southbound Roselle Road onto westbound Illinois Boulevard obscured the view of both drivers.
Burglars strike cars, homes
Burglars have broken into cars and homes recently in Arlington Heights. Burglars stole money this week out of four lock boxes in a bedroom closet in a home on the 300 block of South Harvard Avenue. Value was estimated at $10,000. A week earlier, a man carrying a red duffel bag stole two laptop computers and three MP3 players out of a home on the 1200 block of North Harvard Avenue. He was leaving just as a neighbor entered the rear utility door to let his neighbor's dog out. In addition, 10 cars were burglarized recently. The thieves stole electronic equipment, including six GPS systems.
Sierra Club hosting forum
Democratic state Reps. Paul Froehlich of Schaumburg and Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook will join the Sierra Club for a discussion of environmental issues facing the state at 10 a.m. Sunday at Spring Valley Nature Center Sanctuary, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg. The public is invited. Froehlich faces newcomer John Moynihan in the Feb. 5 Democratic primary. The Sierra Club has endorsed Froehlich, saying he will "fight for renewable energy sources to combat global warming, reduce air pollution to keep kids from developing asthma and prevent chemical companies from dumping toxins into Lake Michigan that poison our drinking water." Moynihan said he's passionate about environmental issues, questions why the state hasn't required stronger emissions control for automobiles and doesn't understand why Froehlich would have won the endorsement. But Moynihan said he's still supportive of the Sierra Club.
