Briefs: Crash death an accident
A Marengo woman died from massive head, chest and neck injuries after her car rear-ended a semi last month on the Jane Addams Tollway, a Kane County coroner's jury ruled Wednesday. Julie A. Turdik, 43, was killed Dec. 6 in the crash near Route 47. Drugs or alcohol were not cited as factors in the wreck, which was ruled an accident. The crash took place about 7:40 a.m. in the eastbound lanes on I-90. Turdik, a teacher at the Kinder Care Learning Center in Geneva, died at the scene.
Death ruled accident
The death of a Carpentersville teenager in a crash Dec. 8 was ruled an accident Wednesday by a Kane County coroner's jury. Edgar M. Rico, 17, died as a result of head and chest injuries in the crash on Route 62 near Barrington Hills, the jurors ruled. The crash took place after Rico's car crossed the median and hit an on-coming car, authorities said.
Bartlett band raises funds
On Jan. 12, in preparation for their Disney World performance March 26, the Bartlett High School Band will hold a bowling fundraising event. U-46 helps with book drive
The Community of Readers annual book drive sponsored by Elgin Area School District U-46 and First Community Bank will run through Feb. 2. New or used pre-school, elementary and middle school books can be brought to the bank's Elgin branches at 50 Tyler Creek Plaza and 165 S. Randall Road.
