Volunteers needed to tutor in reading/English: The Literacy Connection will hold a free orientation session from 6-8:15 p.m. Thursday at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. Volunteers are needed to tutor in both basic reading and English as a Second Language. No special education is required. Buddy shelter: The Buddy Foundation, a nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue organization, has broken ground for a shelter in Arlington Heights and is selling engraved bricks for the shelter's entrance as a fundraiser. Crochet, knit or quilt for babies: Stitches From The Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, sweaters and hats for babies in need.
