Trial delayed for man who was deported 3 times
The trial of a man deported three times to his native Mexico only to return a fourth time and, according to police, cause a crash that killed a motorcyclist was postponed Thursday because of the unavailability of two key prosecution witnesses.
Eulalio Haro, 35, was scheduled to face trial beginning Monday on charges of reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence stemming from the June 2006 crash that took the life of 71-year-old Crystal Lake resident Dean Knospe.
Court documents filed by the McHenry County state's attorney's office say the two -- described in court as witnesses to the fatal crash -- have a previously scheduled business trip out of state next week and would be unable to testify if the trial began as scheduled.
Haro's attorney did not object to the delay.
Haro, who was living in Woodstock at the time of the crash, was deported to Mexico more than a decade ago after being convicted of reckless homicide for a drunken-driving crash that killed his brother. He was deported twice more in 2005, but twice more re-entered the country illegally.
