Numerous veterans honors set in Lake County

Veterans Day is Sunday and county residents plan to honor this country's veterans in a variety of tributes.

Here is a list of what is happening throughout the area:

Sunday

• Waukegan's annual Veterans Day parade begins at 10 a.m. at Grand Avenue and Genessee Street and proceeds south and west to Veterans Park, where a patriotic program will be presented.

• Lindenhurst will host a ceremony at 11 a.m., at the Veterans Memorial in front of the village hall. Participants will include an Army color guard unit, the Lakes High School band, the Lindenhurst VFW Post 4894 and Lindenhurst Mayor Susan Lahr. Keynote speaker will be David Sears. Sears, a Lindenhurst resident, commands an Army recruiting battalion.

• The Fox Lake American Legion Post will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Fox Lake Veterans War Memorial at the Metra Station, at Grand Avenue and Nippersink Drive. The event will feature a prayer, 21-gun salute and guest speakers. For more information, call (847) 587-2323.

• Wauconda High School will dedicate its Freedom Shrine at 2 p.m. in the school's gym, 555 N. Main St., Wauconda. It's a collection of 28 photos reproducing documents that shaped the nation's history. The display is sponsored by Wauconda Unit District 118, American Legion Post 911 and the Exchange Club of Grayslake. During the ceremony, U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean will present a Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal to Marine Gunnery Sgt. Scott Ottensen of McHenry.

Monday

• State Rep. JoAnn Osmond will address students during an 8 a.m. breakfast in the cafeteria at Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa. A school assembly follows at 9 a.m. Visiting veterans will be invited to participate in class activities during the day.
